A View from the Hill
By Doris Brosnan
At the April meet
ing o f the W illow Creek
Terrace Board, members bid
farewell to Renee Devin,
who has serv ed as a board
member since the 1998 vi
sion o f an assisted-living
facility becam e a reality
in 2002, a facility that will
celebrate 10 years o f opera
tion this October.
At this same meet
ing, board m em bers dis
cussed the fact that seven
couples have lived at the
Terrace at different times
d u rin g th e se 10 y e a rs.
M em bers agree that this
fact points to a need in
our com m unity for one-
bedroom ap artm en ts, to
better accom m odate two
individuals. Consequently,
M anager G eorge N airns
now has her work cut out
for her: search for ideas
and cost estimates on two
additional apartments, from
construction designers and
building contractors. She
reports that questions and
ideas will be welcomed at
541-676-0004.
April showers have
also had their work cut out
for them at Willow Creek
Terrace, and the residents
c o n tin u e to view th ese
showers as critical to the
Terrace's plan for food and
flowers.
Thanks to George
Sieler, the garden spot is
now ready for planting. In
fact, George completed his
volunteered rototilling o f
the large space just in time
for Bud Batty and M an
ager Nairns to get the red,
white and russet potatoes
into the ground. Lois A l
len joined them when they
co n tinued p lanting, this
time sweet onions. Gradu
ally, other seeds and starts
will increase the size o f the
garden, and many donors

have already reported that
they w ill share som e o f
their vegetable starts with
the Terrace.
Several o f the la
dies. both residents and
staff, also dug in the dirt
when they planted flower
seeds in the back flower
beds last Friday. H opes
are high o f a cacophony o f
colors and flavors as spring
merges into sum m er and
then into fall. Produce will
supplem ent the menus at
m ealtim e and help stock
the freezer for the winter.
Flowering plants will fill
in the back beds and supply
a nice variety for the front
and side planters.
With the return of
spring plants comes many
birds, and the residents are
enjoying their opportunities
to view and identify the
increasing variety o f spe
cies that share their feeders
or argue over ownerships
o f the feeders. The new
est resident on the Hill is
Vernon Cecil, who delights
in bird watching so much
that he brought a birdbath
and birdfeeders with him
from La Grande. Vernon
once lived in Heppner, so
he is returning to familiar
country and is now almost
next door to his niece, Jan
Stroeber.
A nd speaking o f
d o o r s ...r e s id e n ts , v is i
tors and staff all seem to
“Love the door!” The new,
autom atic opener on the
front door is making life so
much easier for everyone.
M an ag er N a irn s agreed
that this late realization of
something that should have
been obvious resembles an
“I could have had a V8!”
m om ent. Every day, the
hands-free entrance proves
its usefulness.
T h e o n e ro o m
a v ailab le at the T errace
for re sp ite care c o n tin
ues to prove useful, also.
Presently, Nona Grace is a
temporary neighbor in the
Terrace, as she completes
some physical therapy with
a therapist who comes to the
Terrace to work with her.
Most likely, Nona will be
in respite care when she cel
ebrates her birthday on May
7. This occasion gives her
neighbors another birthday
lunch to look forward to.
On April 20, they enjoyed
helping Dean Gilman cel
ebrate his special day, the
day he turned 91.
D e a n ’s b irth d a y
added to the list o f April
events in which residents
p articip ated . The m onth
began with Palm Sunday,
Holy Week and Easter— all
important to many o f the
residents, some of whom at
tended local services. April
F o o ls’ Day and Tongue-
Twister Day added a little
tension on April 1, though,
because one didn’t know
who might pull a joke or
who might cause side-split
ting laughter when trying to
clearly and correctly make a
tongue-twisting statement.
A lthough no one
opted to actually dance on
the national celeb ratio n
o f Ballroom D ancing on
A pril 4, many m em ories
were sparked by a delight
ful discussion o f “back in
the d ay ....” The same can
be said about Siblings Day
on the 10lh, as residents
and staff reminisced about
their growing-up years with
brothers and sisters.
G rille d -C h e e s e -
Sandwich Day, on April 12,
was also National Licorice
Day (we don't make these
up, readers), but Manager
Naims reports that the two
pleasu res for the palate
were not served together.
In fact, the sandwiches were
served with the absolute
necessity: Tomato Soup.
H ardly a n y th in g
else is more pleasurable
than laughter, so on In-
te rn a tio n a l-M o m e n t-o f-
Laughter Day, residents
could watch a comedy at
their afternoon matinee.
As April draws to
a close in less than a week,
residents will add a few
more events to their calen
dar. Earth Day was on April
22, a perfect lead-in to Bird
Day on the 26lh and Arbor
Day on April 27. And when
anyone wonders “ W hat's
up. Doc?” on Bugs Bunny’s
Birthday on the 30th, perfect
weather will probably en
able Terrace residents to
get outdoors for the answer:
th eir feath ered frie n d s,
sprouting plants and buds
on the trees. Such a marvel
ous world to view.
Old Time Fiddlers
The Blue Mountain Old Time Fiddlers will be at
Stokes Landing in Irrigon on April 28 at 6 p.m.
Admission is $5; food will be available.
