St. Patrick’s pageants a
beloved Heppner tradition
For 29 years, the
Heppner Chamber of Com
merce has sponsored three
days of celebration in honor
of St. Patrick. After many
such celebrations, someone
suggested to the pastor of
St. Patrick’s Parish in Hep
pner, Father Gerry Con
don, that there should be a
drama in honor of the great
saint. After unsuccessfully
searching for such a drama,
Condon decided to write
one himself. Thus was the
start of six dramas written
by Condon in collaboration
with musician and com
poser, Joe Lindsay.
This year’s effort
w ill be a repeat of 2008’s
“From Cenacle to Calvary”
with a new scene added in
the Garden of Gethsemane.
As to why an encore per
formance, Condon admits,
“I let time go by, and it
became too late to start a
new one.”
The play follows
the Passion of Our Lord
Jesus Christ, from Cenacle
(the upper room where the
Last Supper was held) to
Calvary (the site of His
crucifixion). Condon said
his hope is that this drama
“will be inspiring for all
who attend.”
As the busy shep
herd of not just one, but two
flocks, lone and Heppner,
it is understandable why
he couldn’t fit in writing a
new drama. He explains the
dramas are written over the
course of several months,
split between his summer
break in Ireland and free
time in Heppner.
Condon reflects on
the “widespread accep
tance” his dramas have
received. Over the years,
the casts have included
pastors and members of
other denominations. The
