WWII ARTIFACTS
Library announces addition of
Mango Languages
-Continuedfrom PAGE ONE defense artifacts, war bonds
store back east that he saw
a postcard w ith a picture o f
Hitler. When he turned it
over, he saw that it wasn’t
addressed but that it bore
both German and Czecho
slovakian stamps, as well as
a red swastika and Czecho
slovakian postmark dated
October 3, 1938, two days
after the Germans invaded
the country. He bought it
and brought it home.
The rest is, quite
literally, history.
Nelson's extensive
collection now includes
a rm b a n d s w orn by the
Jews, German swords and
bayonets, dog tags from
every country involved in
the war, POW letters, let
ters from soldiers o f several
nations— all translated—
newspapers and magazines,
as well as full U.S. medic
kit and uniform with per
sonal rations. His collection
contains more from Europe
than the Pacific Theater, but
he also says he has as much
or more from the American
home front, such as civil
and rationing stamps. Al
most everything is original,
with few reproductions.
One of the unique
aspects o f Nelson’s collec
tion is that it’s available to
travel anywhere any time.
He says he designed it that
way because he wants to
share it with people who
might not see the artifacts if
they were kept in his house,
or even in a museum.
“I wanted to take it
around and show kids his
tory,” says Nelson. “They
might not ever get to a mu
seum. 1 don’t know if they
even have m useum s like
that in the northwest.”
Especially impor
tant to him is the hand-
on nature o f his displays.
N e w sp a p e rs and m ag a
zines are even laminated so
people can thumb through
them.
“Kids really enjoy
looking at these things,
even looking at the Life
magazines and the ads. It’s
a completely different type
o f magazine than they have
Nelson's display includes orig
inal newspapers and maga
zines like this one, which
are laminated so people can
thum b through them in a
hands-on experience of World
War II history,
now,” he says. He said most
grade- and middle-school
ers are too young for his
exhibit, but older students
and adults love it. “Juniors
and seniors have studied
enough to appreciate and
understand w hat th e y ’re
seeing.”
N e lso n ’s display
will be at the Port o f Mor
row in Boardman on Sun
day, March 4 at 2:30 p.m.
The event hosted by the
Morrow County Historical
Society and is free to the

O regon Trail L i

last week that the library
d is tr ic t now o ffe rs the
Mango Languages online
language-learning system
to its patrons.
Mango is free for

card, patrons can access the
system from any computer
connected to the Internet.
Apps for the iPad, iPhone
and iPod Touch are also
available. M ango is also
available on library com
puters.
“The courses are
presented with an appre
ciation for cultural nuance
and real-world application
that integrates components
o f vocabulary, pronuncia
tion, grammar and culture,”
according to a statem ent
from the library. “ U sers

w ith in an a u d io -v isu a l
framework that allows the
u ser to draw im p o rtan t
connections between pieces
o f information they have
already learned.”
M ango offers 38
different basic and com
plete language program s
for English speakers and
15 E nglish as a Second
Language courses for non-
English speaking residents.
Mango Basic teaches ev
eryday g reetin g s, g ra ti
tudes, goodbyes and helpful
phrases in a short period
o f time and is designed to
appeal to a beginner in a
new language. Each basic
course requires only two to
five hours o f time to com
plete. The Mango Complete
program s are 100-lesson
courses designed to provide
a deep understanding of a
language and its culture.
The availability of
M ango languages in the
Oregon Trail Library Dis
trict is made possible by
the financial support from
local businesses and orga
nizations including Board-
m an C h am b er o f C o m
m erce, Boardman Foods,
Inc.. Cascade Specialties.
Inc., Courtesy Staffing, Inc.
and Heppner Friends of the
Library.
“We are thrilled to
add our district's libraries
to the growing list o f librar
ies across the country who
have added Mango to their
resources,” said Richmond.
“Some people need to learn
a second language for busi
ness. travel or educational
reasons. Others just w ant to
because they think it would
be interesting. No m atter
the reason, learning the lan
guage should be fun. With
Mango, it definitely is.”
To le a r n m o re
about M ango and get a
preview of what the pro
gram has to offer, patrons
can stop by the library and
