Lady Cards hold on to second
place approaching districts
The lone Lady Car
dinals held on firmly to their
second place spot in the Big
Sky East with a split last
week, losing a key match up
on the road in Condon and
coasting to a win at home
against Echo. The Cardi
nals’ record now stands at
14-4 on the season, 8-2 in
the Big Sky Conference
(BSC).
In Condon on Janu
ary 31, the Knights got
out to a quick start, lead
ing 14-6 at the end of one
quarter, but the Cardinals
came back and only trailed
by 5, for a halftime score
of 20-15.
After the break, the
Knights went on a scoring
tear, outscoring lone 19-9
in the third, and held on for
the 52-40 win.
“This was another
very physical game and we
lost the rebound battle,”
said Coach Mike Garrett.
“That, along with a cold
shooting night, was the dif
ference in the game. Con
don is a very good team and
every time we play them we
find out something that we
can work on and improve.
With the win, they secured
the Big Sky East #1 seed
and we will hopefully get
a chance to play them at
Districts.”
Jo A n n a P a tto n
was the Cardinals’ leading
scorer with 14, and Shadow
Kendrick had 10.
On Friday, Febru
ary 3, the Cardinals got
a slow start against Echo
but quickly turned a 10-10
first quarter tie into a 33-14
half-time lead. The Cards
lengthened the lead to 45-
20 before coasting home to
the 55-39 win.
“ We played very
well against Echo,” said
Coach Garrett. “We had 12
turnovers (season low) and
the second quarter was one
of the best quarters that we
have played all year. The
team is starting to come
together, and I hope that we
are getting ready to peak at
the right time. We have a
busy week to finish out the
regular season and I think
that is going to help us go
ing into Districts.”
Shadow Kendrick
notched a double-double
with 17 points and 14 re
bounds. Lacey Thompson
added 11 points,

Mustang boys set for districts
The Heppner High
basketball teams traveled
to Enterprise last Friday to
play the Outlaws.
The Mustangs girls’
varsity team played great
defense and held the score
even at half-time. The Out
laws then came out hot in
the third quarter to take the
lead by six points going into
the final quarter. Good free-
throw shooting by Heppner
as a team (13-18) and Carrie
Haguewood’s eight for nine
from the stripe made it close
at the end o f regulation.
Although they ultimately
gave up the victory, losing
50-47 to the Outlaws, the
Mustangs controlled the
boards and played well as
a team.
The boys’ varsity
beat the Outlaws 55-50 in
a hard-won game in Enter
prise. The game was up for
grabs in the fourth quarter,
but Heppner came away
with the needed win.
In the second set of
Heppner varsity basketball team members (L-R): Cam Day
(1), Aidan Wright (2), Jake Bowles (24), Justin Bailey (4),
Stephen Thompson (3), Justin Franger (11), Cody Orr (23),
JC Putman (0), Bryce Fowler (20), Kyle Harrison (12) and
Garret Robinson (5) with coach Jeremy Rosenbaum and as
sistant coach Ken Grieb. -Photo by Sandy Matthews
games during their week-
end road trip, the Mustangs
stopped in Elgin to play the
Huskies.
The Mustang boys
struggled to find their of
fense and ended up badly
beaten by the home team.
59-33.
The girls played
another close game but
couldn't quite bring home
the victory, going into over
time against the Huskies.
Late in the overtime period,
Elgin hit a three-pointer and
then a free-throw to pull
ahead with 12 seconds left.
The Mustangs got down
the floor with the ball and
Bailey Bennet hit a three-
pointer at the buzzer to
end the game, losing to the
Huskies 48-47.
With their victory
over the Outlaws, the Mus
tang boys have secured their
place in districts, which take
place Friday, Feb. 17.
