NRCS funding here NRCS community
for Oregon projects meeting scheduled
U SD A N a tu ra l
Resources Conservation
Service (NRCS) Oregon
State Conservationist Ron
Alvarado announced Mon
day a funding opportunity
for wetland protection, res
toration and enhancement
activities on eligible lands
in Oregon. Proposals for
projects are due by Feb.
10. Funding comes through
the agency’s Wetlands Re
serve Enhancement Pro
gram (W REP), with up
to $17 million available
nationwide.
“This is a great op
portunity for Oregon stake
holders to carry out high-
priority wetland protection
and improve wildlife habi
tat,” Alvarado said. “WREP
is an important conservation
tool for our Oregon partners
and I encourage eligible
organizations to apply.”
W REP is a volun
tary conservation program
that works through partner
ship agreements with states,
nongovernmental organiza
tions and tribes. WREP is a
component of the Wetlands
Reserve Program (WRP),
through which NRCS en
ters into agreements with
eligible partners to lever
age resources to carry out
wetland protection and im
prove wildlife habitat.
Benefits to partners
in WREP agreements in
clude wetland restoration in
high-priority areas; the abil
ity to cost-share restoration
or enhancement com po
nents beyond those required
by NRCS; participating in
.management or monitoring
o f selected project loca
tions; and opportunities to
use innovative restoration
methods and practices.
Eligible partners
may submit general WREP
proposals for individual,
watershed-wide or larger
geographical area projects.
WREP partners are required
to contribute a financial or
technical assistance fund
match.
Oregon NRCS will
use a competitive process
to evaluate the proposals.
Recommended proposals
will then be competed na
tionally for final selection
and funding.
To submit a pro
posal or receive informa
tion about WREP, visit
http://w w w .or.nrcs.usda.
gov/programs/wrep/index.
html or contact Loren Un-
ruh. State Programs Leader,
at 503-414-3235 or loren.
unruh@or.usda.gov. WREP
proposals submitted by fax
or through grants.gov will
not be accepted.
The USDA Natural
Resources C onservation
Service (NRCS) will host
a public meeting Feb. 7
from 10 a.m. to noon in
the USDA Service Center
Conference Room at 430
Linden Way in Heppner.
The purpose o f the meet
ing will be to gather input
regarding natural resource
opportunities and priorities
across the county.
The goal o f the
NRCS is to bring together
individuals with a variety
of expertise and knowledge,
allowing NRCS and oth
ers to build on collective
successes while focusing
efforts to make the greatest
impact with available staff
and funding.
N RCS seeks to
identify where the best
investments can be made
to address natural resource
problems, share the work
that has already been done
in the county and share vi
sions for what the county
will look like when these
natural resource concerns
have been solved.
Information pro
vided by attendees will help
guide conservation efforts
and funding over the next
five to 10 years.
“[Community] in
put in this process is very
valuable, as we will be
using this information to fo
cus our work in the future,”
states an NRCS spokes
person.

Rep. Smith thanks
Senator Nelson for
legislative service
R e p re s e n ta tiv e
Greg Smith (R-Heppner)
today thanked Senator Da
vid Nelson (R-Pendleton)
for his legislative service
and accomplishments for
Eastern Oregon. Nelson
Monday announced his
retirement after serving 16
years in the Oregon State
Senate.
“Throughout his
years in the Oregon Leg
islature, Senator David
Nelson has been a leader
in promoting education,
agriculture and economic
development in rural Or
egon,” Rep. Smith said.
“Senator Nelson has served
our region with integrity
and distinction, and 1 wish
David and his family all the
best in his retirement.”
Smith also said he
will not be a candidate in
Senate District 29, but will
continue to seek a seventh
term in the Oregon House
of Representatives.
“ I ’m honored to
serve the citizens of House
District 57, and I look for
w ard to continuing my
work on the Joint Ways and
Means Committee,” Smith
said. “After securing over
$30 million for local capital
construction projects in the
2011-12 budget, 1 believe
I’m most effective working
with Republicans and Dem
ocrats in the Oregon House.
I’ll continue to work closely
with Eastern Oregon’s del
egation in 2013, including
our next state senator.”

The Heppner National Honor Society is putting
on a donation drive on January 31.
One of the chapter’s main focuses is community
service. To that end, the chapter would like to gather
any extra clothing or used furniture to donate to local
charities.
The NHS chapter will be picking up the donations
the day of the drive. Anyone who would like to arrange
for a donation pick-up can contact chapter president
Justin Pranger at 541-256-0069, or advisor Petra Payne
