The lone Lady Car
dinals split their weekend
games, losing to Big Sky-
East rival Condon/Wheeler
on Friday but following
up with an easy win at
Sherman on Saturday. The
Cards’ season record now
stands at ll-3 , 5-1 in the
Big Sky Conference.
The highly antici
pated Big Sky Conference
showdown between lone
and Condon/Wheeler did
not disappoint in terms of
suspense, lead changes and
drama. Lacey Thompson
put six of her team-high 15
points on the board in the
first quarter, and the Cards
led by as much as five. The
quarter ended with lone up
12-9. The Cardinals held
the lead by as much as six
points through most of the
second quarter but, with
under a minute remaining,
the Lady Knights tied the
score at 26 and M ariah
Camargo put back on offen
sive rebound at the buzzer
to put the Knights up 28-26
at the half.
After the break, the
Cards looked unfocused
and the Knights capitalized.
Starting at the end of the
second quarter and into the
first two m inutes of the third,
Condon/Wheeler scored 15
unanswered points. JoAnna
Patton was successful in
driving the lane, scoring six
points in the third quarter,
but the Cards ended the
period trailing by eight,
43-35. Foul trouble, which
kept Mary Rietmann and
M akenna Ramos on the
bench for most of the first
half, showed up again in the
second half, with Ramos
and Stacee Halvorsen both
tallying their fourth foul in
the third frame.
Condon/W heeler
held their biggest lead of the
day, 45-35, with 7:27 left
to play in the game but the
Lady Cards were not ready
to throw in the towel. The
Cardinals whittled the lead
down to five with just over a
minute left but the Knights
went into a stall. When the
Cards were forced to foul,
the Knights hit three of five
free-throw attempts to take
the win 51-43.
The bright spots for
the Lady Cards was their
interior play, according to
Coach Mike Garrett, but
the killer was committing
30 team turnovers and al
lowing Condon/W heeler
to control the tempo. Lacey
Thom pson and JoAnna
Patton both tallied double
doubles w ith 11 and ten
rebounds respectively to
complement their double
digit scoring.
The Lady C ardi
nals rebounded from the
loss on Friday to shellac
Sherman County on Satur
day. After building a 19-2
first-quarter lead, the Cards
rolled on to a 68-36 win.
Shadow Kendrick was the
game's leading scorer with
16. Also in double figures
were Lacey Thompson with
13 and Mary Rietmann with
11. Lauren Garrett led the
team in rebounds with eight
and Mary Rietmann added
seven.
"You are always a
little concerned as a coach
with these back-to-back
games,’’ said Garrett, “but
I was pleased with how the
kids responded. We saw
some really good stuff in
the Sherman game.”
