“This has to be the
weirdest thing that ever
floated by me on the Snake
River,” said local woman
Barbara VanArsdale, refer
ring to the sight of a snake
and a falcon locked together
in a life-and-death struggle
in the water.
“They were stuck
together in death lock, each
wanting to kill the other
first.” she said. Van Arsdale
speculated that the falcon
snatched up the tasty snake,
which somehow got its tail
around the falcon's neck,
strangling it in midair and
causing both of them to
crash into the river.
“I think a fewr more
minutes and the snake
would have w on,” said
Van Arsdale.
She sa id the
snake’s tail was tied in a
knot around the falcon’s
neck and getting tighter by
the second. She fished the
duo out of the water and
first got the snake untied.
They both survived the
encounter and were doing
fairly well last time she
saw them. VanArsdale also
made it through the en
counter unscathed, and said
neither of the animals hurt
her while she attempted to
untangle them.
“The snake didn’t
want to stop biting the fal
con's leg, and only let go
after I had untied every
thing else,” she said. “I got
the water out of the falcon’s
lungs with birdie inversion
technique, and stayed with
him until he was almost
dried off in the sun and fly
ing a little.”
VanArsdale took
the accompanying photos
not only to remember the
event but, she said, because
she knew no one would be
lieve the tale otherwise.
“This is one of
those stories you tell, and
are always acknowledged
with. 'Yeah, right!”’ said
VanArsdale. “Well, here’s
the proof.”
