Both varsity Mus
tang basketball teams picked
up victories against the Tri-
Cities Prep teams January
3, but then fell short in
Blue Mountain Conference
(BMC) play following the
holiday break.
T h e M u s ta n g s
hosted Tri-Cities Prep on
January 3. The girls’ varsity
team led the entire game
and defeated Prep 42-37.
A late surge by Prep made
the contest interesting when
they hit a three-point shot
with two minutes left in the
fourth quarter to make the
score 36-35. The Mustangs
ladies looked polished in
the win, poised to begin
conference play over the
weekend.
The varsity boys
pulled together for a late
win against the Prep 54-
52. With Tri-Cities lead
ing 31-19 at halftime, the
Mustangs began to pick
up intensity in the third
quarter. Down by 13 points
at the beginning o f the
fourth, the Mustangs went
on a scoring run to even the
contest 45-45 with 3:30 left
on the clock. The final min
utes were Heppner’s best
efforts thus far this season.
With four ties and not more
than two points in favor for
either team, the Mustangs
pulled out a come-from-
behind win.
The team s next
faced Stanfield in league
home games Friday night.
The Tigers from Stanfield
edged out a win over the
girls 39-38. The Mustangs’
failure to score effectively
in the first quarter caught
up to them at the end of the
game.
In the boys’ game,
the Mustangs found them
selves tied with the visit
ing Tigers at the half. In
the third quarter, Heppner
outscored Stanfield 12 to
three, but the Tigers roared
back in the fourth quarter
to eke out a win over the
Mustangs, 52-50.
A fter those two
tough losses on Friday
night, the teams traveled to
Irrigon to play the Knights.
Heppner held the tempo
down on the faster Knights,
but the Irrigon team's de
fense held Heppner to only
three points in the first quar
ter, leading the Knights to a
48-39 victory. The Mustang
boys are now 2-2 in confer
ence play.
The varsity girls
held the game until the final
two minutes of play against
the Knights. The Irrigon
team then scored 17 points
in the fourth quarter to over
take the Mustangs 49-46.
The varsity girls are now
1-3 in conference play.
On Friday, January
13, Heppner travels to Pilot
Rock to take on the Rock
ets. The Mustangs will then
host Weston-McEwen in
Heppner on Saturday.

The lone Lady Car
dinals ran their league mark
to 3-0 with two easy wins
this past weekend, downing
Nixyaawii on Friday and
Arlington on Saturday.
The Lady Cards
never gave Nixyaawii, the
20 ll state champions, a
chance, using tough defense
to hold the Golden Eagles
to four points through three
quarters.
Enroute to a 57-24
win, Stacee Halvorsen con
tinued her scoring rampage,
leading the team with 16
points. Shadow Kendrick
with 12 and Jo Anna Patton
with 10 were also in double
figures. Lacey Thompson
and Shadow Kendrick led
the way on the boards with
six rebounds each, while
Makenna Ramos and Lacey
Thompson each had four
assists.
“We came ready to
play. We jumped on them
early and kept the pressure
up. Defensively we played
a very good game, holding
them to four points through
three quarters,” said Coach
Mike Garrett.
On Saturday, the
Cards used stellar defense
to ward off a cold start to
their shooting game on the
way to rolling over Arling
ton 52-16.
“We started the Ar
lington game shooting the
ball poorly but, defensively,
we were still playing at a
very high level,” said Coach
Garrett. “This makes two
consecutive games where
we held a league opponent
to four points at the half.
I was especially pleased
with the second unit, who
continue to show much
improvement as the season
has progressed.”
Jo A nna P atton
notched a double-double
with 17 points and 15 re
bounds. Shadow Kendrick
was the only other Cardinal
player in double figures
with 16. Mary Rietmann
had nine rebounds.
The Cardinals look
forward to an important
home game versus Condon/
Wheeler on Friday, Janu
ary 13. They then travel to
Sherman on Saturday.
