Cardinal Basketball Lady Cards take second in Bonanza

T he lo n e Lady
Cardinals finished in sec­
ond place in lone’s Bas­
ketball Bonanza, splitting
their games on the open­
ing weekend of basketball
season, December 2 and
3. The Cards opened their
season on Friday with a
solid win over Pine Eagle,
but Enterprise proved to
be the stronger team in the
second half on Saturday as
they handed lone a loss.
Friday’s game with
Pine Eagle was close in the
first quarter, where lone
led 12-11. The Lady Cards
stepped on the gas in the
second quarter, outscoring
the Spartans 20-11, and
then held them scoreless in
the third period to comfort­
ably win the game 51-35.
Shadow Kendrick led all
scorers with 13 points with
JoAnna Patton chipping in
12. Mary Rietmann paced
the team on the boards with
13 rebounds.
On Saturday, the
Lady Cards led Enterprise
27-21 at the half, but the
Outlaws cranked it up in
the second h alf and the
C ardinals showed signs
of fatigue. Enterprise out-
scored lone 39-24 in the
final two quarters on their
way to the tourney title 60-
51. The Cards went cold
after the break, shooting
just five o f 30, and took
some hard knocks to the
starting players. Shadow
Kendrick led the lone team
in scoring with 18 points,
with JoAnna Patton hot on
her heels with 17.
The Cards travel to
Heppner this weekend for
the Heppner Tournament.

After winning his
very first match as a Mus­
tang by fall over his Mac Hi
opponent, freshman Jesse
Boyd (132 lbs.) went on to
finish fourth.
T resto n M aben
(152 lbs.) finished fourth
with a 2-2 record for the
day. His two losses came
at the hands of the same op­
ponent in the first round and
then in a rematch during the
consolation championship.
Freshmen Khay-
man Heard and John Proph-
eter also wrestled in their
first-ever high school tour­
nament and won matches in
exhibition competition.
The Mustangs next
travel to La Grande to com­
pete in the M uilenburg
tournament on December 9
and 10. The Muilenburg is
the largest wrestling tourna­
ment in eastern Oregon and
features teams from all over
Oregon and Idaho ranging
from 1A to 6A.

The FFA annual
canned food drive is com­
ing to a close at Heppner
High School. Classes are
competing for a celebration
of success during the activ­
ity period, based on which
class brings in the most
food. The donations are
kept local and will be dis­
tributed during the holiday
season. Protein and healthy
selections are encouraged.
According to worldhunger.
org, one person in every
seven in the world is hun­
gry; FFA members ask that
local residents use that to
motivate themselves, their
sons and their daughters to
bring in something to help
out their class and our com­
munity.

holiday
closures
The OSU Exten­
sion office will be closed
December 22 through 27
in observance of the Christ­
mas holiday. The office will
also he closed January 2 for
the New Year holiday.
