Chili feed to benefit Firewood season
Skaggs
extended
A chili feed to support Darin Skaggs' medical
fund will be held at the Heppner Elks Lodge on Monday,
November 14 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Dinner includes a bowl of chili with choice of
toppings (onions, cheese, Fritos), combread, a mini maple
bar and choice of beverage (lemonade, water or coffee).
It is donation only, but raffle tickets will be sold.
One item to be raffled is a $500 Les Schwab
gift certificate donated by Mark and Pam Wunderlick of
Wilkinson Ranches; John, Kelly and Tyler Boyer; Bob,
George and Kyle Naims; and Dave, Rhonda, Travis and
Josh Winters. Tickets for this raffle will be $5 each. There
will also be a raffle for a basket of homemade food and
canned items donated by employees of Bank of Eastern
Oregon and the Richard and Pam Schmidt family. Tickets
for the basket are $ 1 a ticket or $5 for six tickets. A cord
of wood donated by Jeff, Stormy, Bailey and Karsyn
Botefuhr and Clearview Auto Glass will go for $5 per
ticket. A manicure and pedicure by Sheri Warnock will
be $1 a ticket or $5 for six tickets.
All of the raffles w ill be drawn at the end of the
dinner. Winners need not be present. To purchase tickets
for any of the raffles prior to that night, contact Teresa
Bedortha at 571-6575, Rhonda Winters at 676-9294 or
Shelli Britt at 676-5478.
Personal-use fire
wood cutting on the Uma
tilla National Forest will be
extended until Wednesday,
November 30 to allow per
mit holders two additional
weeks to gather firewood
for their homes.
“ Woodcutting
season was shortened this
year,” said Kevin Martin,
Forest Supervisor. Snow-
pack in the mountains lim
ited access to the forest in
late spring and then extreme
fire danger prohibited fire
wood cutting for several
weeks this summer. “Hope
fully, if weather conditions
allow, the public will have
a few more weekends to fill
their woodshed.”
The public is asked
to take additional precau
tions when cutting firewood
late into the fall when con
ditions can be soggy and
saturated. Mountain travel
will require extreme care to
avoid getting stuck or caus
ing extensive and illegal
resource damage to the land
and vegetation.
A nother concern
for late season firewood
cutting is the misidenti-
fication o f live or dead
western larch, also known
as Tamarack. Larch is the

the fall.
“Because its nee
dles turn yellow and fall to
the ground, a living larch
can appear to be dead, ' said
Martin.
Tips on identify
ing live larch are located
in the firewood guide that
accompanies the firewood
permit.
Firewood permits
can be purchased up until
November 15 at forest of
fices or at several local
businesses in the commu
nity. After November 15.
permits will only be avail
able, during regular work
hours, at the five I matilla
National Forest offices. Per
mits cost $5 per cord w ith a
minimum purchase of four
cords for $20. A maximum
purchase of 12 cords total,
per household, is allowed
from National Forest lands
during the calendar year.
Firewood cutting
in Umatilla National Forest
will not be available again
until May of 2012.
