lone falls to strong Dufur
Rangers take it 48-14
The lone football
team traveled to play a
quick Dufur team Friday,
October 7.
• The Cardinal team
played well but missed op
portunities to score. At the
end of the first half, lone
was near the goal line when
the buzzer sounded, ending
a good offensive attack.
T h ro u g h o u t the
game, lone’s punt return
team put the Cardinals in
good positions, although
the offense seemed to have
a tough time getting the
ball into the end zone. The
Cardinal kickoff team, led
by Omar Juarez, also did
well to put the Rangers deep
in the backfield, giving the
Cards extra time to defend
their territory.
Near the end of the
game, lone’s Luke Emmel
made a nice fumble recov
ery with a long run down
the field. Micah Stillman
was the leader with the
most points, most tackles
and most yardages gained,
both rushing and receiving.
The rest of the team played
well both offensively and
defensively.
“As bad as the final
score was, we actually had
the opportunity to make
this a competitive game.
We missed chances to score
ourselves and gave up too
many critical big plays. We
played hard throughout the
game and played much bet
ter in the second half,” said
coach Stan Wieper.
“Dufur is a strong
team and you have to give
them credit. It is unfortu-

nate that we were scheduled
to play the top two teams in
our league at the beginning
of the league season. I feel
we would have given both
Sherman and Dufur a m uch
more competitive game if
we would have played them
later in the schedule.”

Lady Cardinals maintain
perfect season
By Ann Morter
The lone Lady Car
dinals maintained their un
blemished season and leap
frogged in the RPI rankings
with big wins across the
board this past week. The
team now sports a 20-0
record and sits fourth in the
OSAA RPI rankings.
The Cardinal’s first
test o f the week came on
Tuesday, October 4, when
east-side league rival Con-
don/Wheeler came to town.
The first game saw the score
tied 13 times, and the Lady
Knights actually had the
lead briefly at 23-22. The
Cards powered back and,
when JoAnna Patton put
down her eighth kill of the
game, lone took the squeak
er 25-23. Losing the first
game took the wind out of
Condon/Wheeler’s sails as
lone rolled to a 25-10 sec
ond game victory. The Lady
Cards were on their way to
another powerful victory in
game three, leading 19-10,
when the Knights climbed
back into the game. Capital
izing on Cardinal miscues,
Condon/Wheeler tied the
game at 23 and had game
point on the Cards at 25-24.
JoAnna Patton’s powerful
middle hitting with three
kills in a row and Stacee
Halvorsen’s two key serves
to finish the game preserved
the win 27-25.
“It was a good win
for us...a good confidence
builder,” said Coach Dawn
Eynetich. “They are the
team we need to beat on our
side of the league.”
JoAnna Patton led
the effort at the net with
19 kills. Dominika Sen-
kerikova added 12. Mary
Rietman was perfect on 14
serves with one ace, while
Makenna Ramos was also
100% on 12 serves. Stacee
Halvorsen was 19-21 from
the service line with three
aces.
On Friday, October
7, the Lady Cardinals ar
rived in Dufur ready to take
on the team sitting atop the
OSAA RPI rankings.

“I was more ner
vous about that game than
any other” said Eynetich,
noting that Dufur Coach
Kelly Darden has a knack
for “making a team out of
anything.”
The C ards took
game one 25-22 but suf
fered their first single game
loss since the Joseph Tour
nament in game two, 19-
25.
“They (Dufur) al
ways hit that third ball and
we weren’t quite expecting
that” said Eynetich.
The lone team re
grouped to take game three
25-16 and sealed the match
win with a 25-12 win in
game four.
Jo A n n a P a tto n
continued to be a force at
the net with 24 kills and
four blocks. Dominika Sen-
kerikova added ten kills and
two blocks. Mary Rietmann
served 22 of 23 with one
ace and Makenna Ramos
notched 42 assists. On a day
where serve errors plagued
the team, Shadow Kendrick
was the only Cardinal to
serve 100% on ten serves.
She had two aces.
“After a big game
on Tuesday, it was great to
see the team play well in an
other big game on Friday,”
said Eynetich.
A weary group hit
the road early Saturday for
an 8 a.m. wake up call at the
Weston Power Tournament.
At the other end of that long
day, the Cardinals collected

without giving their coach
a little heartburn along the
way.
“They were calling
us the comeback kids” said
Eynetich, noting that the
team came from behind in
every win that day.
In pool play, the
Lady Cardinals defeated
Imbler in a couple of close
games 26-24, 25-22. Next
they split with Heppner 26-
27,25-14 and then defeated
Union 25-18, 25-17. This
made lone the number one
team from their pool.
After a four-and-
half-hour period .of down
time, the Cards took on
Grant Union in bracket play.
Grant Union won game one
25-23 but the Lady Cardi
nals revived to finish them
off, 25-12, 15-10. This set
up a rematch with Heppner
for the championship. Af
ter splitting with the Lady
Mustangs in morning pool
play, the Cards gutted out
a 25-23 first game win and
sealed the deal with a 25-15
second game victory for the
championship.
“All in all, it was
a good week for us” said
Coach Eynetich. “We had
good competition and found
some things we need to
work on. It was good to get
matches in against stronger
teams.”
This week, lone
hosts Arlington on Thurs
day evening and travels to
Fossil for another round
with Condon/Wheeler on
Saturday.
