“Egyptian Escape” homecoming dance which was held
one hour earlier due to the delayed football game that was
rescheduled to Saturday at 2 pm., because the football
field lights malfunctioned.
Saturday’s half-time revealed the homecoming

lo n e ’s hom ecom ing game Friday,
Sept. 23, was a memorable one. The Friday night lights
wouldn’t come on. In hopes it was just a blown fuse, a
crew began working on the problem. The game started,

first half. Both teams were scoreless in the third quarter.
South Wasco finally scored a touchdown, with 8:16 left
in the fourth quarter. The final score was 33-6, lone.
lone High School homecoming activities started
with a mud war on Monday, Sept. 19. Ione HS Volley
ball hosted Echo ending with another win on Tuesday.
Wednesday brought matchups in macho-man volleyball
and powder-puff football with seniors and sophomores
competing against the juniors and freshman. The senior/
sophomore teams won both events. Friday night was the

Lady Cardinals keep
winning streak alive
The lone Lady Cardinals enjoyed a week at home
and kept their winning streak alive with two victories
during the past week. The lone team maintained their
perfect 13-0 record for the season.
On Tuesday, September 20, the Cards hosted
their first league match of the season when Echo came
to town. Although the Lady Cougars put up a fight in
the first game, the Cardinals regained the momentum and
rolled to a 25-18, 25-13, 25-9 win.
“It was a little sloppy at first” commented
Coach Dawn Eynetich. “But then we started playing
our game.”
JoAnna Patton led the team at the net with 15
kills and two blocks. Dominika Senkerikova added 12
kills. Collette Cason was 14 of 14 from the service line
with four aces and Shadow Kendrick was perfect on nine
serves with one ace.
“It was good to get our first league win” said
Coach Eynetich.
The Lady Cardinals hosted South Wasco County
in their homecoming match on Friday and wasted no time
easily dispatching the guests, 25-10, 25-16, 25-9.
JoAnna Patton was 10-10 serving with four aces
and notched another 15 kills in the match. Dominika
Senkerikova added nine kills. Shadow Kendrick served
an outstanding 24-24.
The Lady Cardinals played Riverside in lone on
Tuesday and will travel to Sherman County on Friday
and Helix on Saturday. An important game for league
standings is on the horizon when lone will host Condon/
Wheeler on Tuesday, October 4.
Three players caught interceptions: Luke Emmel
in the first quarter, Kaleb Dumler in the third quarter, and
Zac Irons in the fourth quarter, helping the lone team
keep control of the ball. Good blocking allowed for long
runs and Omar Juarez displayed his fine kicking ability,
by attempting some field goals, making one of them while
the others were either tipped or blocked. He also had
some very long punts into the end-zone.
During first quarter play, Evan Rietmann got a
touchdown Friday night and Micah Stillman completed
the point after touchdown, (pat) and on Saturday Stillman
ran in a touchdown down the sideline, with Emmel at
tempting the pat. Then Emmel got a good block, allowing
Stillman to run in another touchdown. Juarez attempted
a field goal. It was tipped and hit the right side goal post
and bounced off, to end the quarter 20-0.
Tyrell Barnett ran in a touchdown to start off the
second quarter and Juarez completed his first field goal.
Emmel ran an exciting punt return 88 yards into the end-
zone, but it was called back on a penalty. Stillman ran it
to the 50-yard-line on the next play. Then Lucas Jobes
completed a pass to Adam Collin, into the end zone, for
a touchdown. Juarez kicked a field goal attempt, only to
be blocked, bringing the half-time score to 33-0.
Third quarter play was with the younger players
learning and practicing on timing and this continued into
the fourth quarter. Coach Weiper had this to say about
the game, “We played very well early in the game and
secured a comfortable lead, which allowed our younger
players an opportunity to gain some valuable experience.
Two players who had outstanding games were Ty Barnett
with 100 yards rushing on some hard nosed running and
six tackles on defense and freshman Brandon Peck on
the defensive line. We will be working hard in practice
this week to prepare for a critical game with Sherman
on the road.”
The Heppner Mustangs Varsity Volleyball team hosted
the Pilot Rock Rockets on Thursday, Sept. 22, in the first league
game of the 2011-12 season.
Being homecoming week for Heppner, the team was
ready to play against the Rockets. The Mustangs won the con
test in three games, 25-19,25-9 and 25-16. The coaching staff
was pleased with the energy of the kids. The emphasis will be
directed at team play as the season progresses to maintain the
unity the team will need to have for a successfully season.
The Elgin Huskies traveled to Heppner on Saturday,
Sept. 24, to play varsity volleyball against the Mustangs. Hav
ing faced the Huskies in pre-season, the Mustangs knew they
would have to play tough to defeat their opponent. It was an
exciting match, that took the Mustangs to game five to defeat
Elgin for the win. Game scores show the momentum swing as
Heppner won the first set, 25-21.
Losing the next set in a close contest, 25-23, and
losing the third set, 25-8. the Mustangs needed a win to stay
alive in the match.
In the fourth set, the Mustangs showed their mental
toughness, bouncing back to win 25-13 to even the match. In
the fifth and final set, the Mustangs continued playing well,

The Tiger-Scots won the match in three games, but for 6 points, Juarez 1 pat kick for 1 point.
Defense- M. Stillman 7 tackles, Juarez 6 tackles, Barnett
each contest was close, 25-22, 27-25 and 25-21.
The Mustangs struggled with their consistency on the 6 tackles
court, but showed their ability with their “down but don’t quit” Interceptions L. Emmel 1, Dumler 1, and Z. Irons 1
attitude that they will need in the coming weeks.
The varsity volleyball team is now 2-1 in league and
will travel to Irrigon on Thursday this week and to Union to
play the Bobcats and the Enterprise Outlaws.
Flu clinics planned
The Morrow County Health Department has
scheduled flu clinics in Heppner and Boardman as fol
lows:
Tuesday, October 4: 101 Boardman Ave., Board-
man, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Thursday, October 6: Heppner City Hall, 111 N.
