Lady Cards com plete
m arathon w eek and come
away unscathed; up
season to 11-0
The lone Lady Cardinals completed a marathon
week o f volleyball and came away unscathed as they
upped their record to 11-0 on the season.
On Thursday, September 15, lone traveled to
Heppner for matches with Heppner and 3A Grant Union.
First up was Grant Union. The Lady Cards did not let
a school a couple classifications up intimidate them,
winning the first two games of the best three of five set,
25-18, 25-11. Grant Union came alive in the third game
and started hitting and attacking. For their efforts, they
handed lone their first game loss since the very first game
of the season, 27-25. However, the Cardinals regrouped
to take the match by winning game four 25-16.
JoAnna Patton was a force to be reckoned with
at the net with 18 kills and six blocks. Dominika Sen-
kerikova was 26-28 serving with nine aces plus added
seven kills and three blocks. Shadow Kendrick was a
perfect 12-12 serving.
Next the Lady Cardinals faced a young Heppner
team, winning that match 25-21, 25-14, 25-17. JoAnna
Patton was 16-16 serving with four aces and continued
to be formidable at the net with 13 kills and three blocks.
Dominika Senkerikova had 10 kills and three aces from
the service line. Makenna Ramos notched 23 assists and
she and Shadow Kendrick were perfect in the serving
department.
On Friday, lone hosted the defending state cham
pion, Cove. The Leopards were hit hard by graduation and
did not resemble the team of 2010. The Lady Cardinals
dismantled them easily, 25-14,25-9,25-13. Serving was
the slight trouble spot on the day with only three girls,
Shadow Kendrick, Stacee Halvorsen and Lauren Garrett,
making all their serves. JoAnna Patton led the team at
the net with 13 kills and five blocks.
After all that, the week of volleyball was far
from over. The Lady Cardinals rolled into Joseph early
Saturday morning to defend their title in the Joseph Tour
nament. In pool play, the Cards downed Wallowa 25-15,
25-16 and defeated Cove 25-13, 25-15. Moving out of
pool play as the number one seed from that pool, they
met Echo in the first game of bracket play, winning that
match 25-8, 25-15. This set up a rematch with Wallowa
for the championship. In the first game, Wallowa led by
as much as six points and held that lead until lone was
able to tie the game at 17. The Lady Cards scrapped back
to win the game 25-21. They followed that with a 25-13
win to take the match and the tournament trophy.
Coach Dawn Eynetich was pleased that the team
“pulled together and did what they needed to do” in this
brutal stretch of volleyball games. “I look at it as being
mentally and physically strong,” she said.
She also noted that Collette Cason had a “phe
nomenal” day at the Joseph tournament, blocking, hitting,
playing the net and not missing a single serve all day.
The Cardinals look forward to a more relaxed
week ahead, hosting Echo on Tuesday, September 20, and
South Wasco County on Friday, September 23.
