Angel Crosthwaite wins regional team roping
championship
A local roper was a
big winner during the recent
United States Team Rop
ing (USTRC) West Coast
R egional C ham pionship
Finals held September 8-11
in Paso Robles, Calif. Angel
T Crosthwaite o f Heppner,
Ore., was the winner in the
#11 Shoot-O ut division,
defeating 66 other teams
with partner Jill E Johnson
o f N ew C uyam a, C alif.
The duo roped four steers
in 36.81 seconds to earn an
$8,000 paycheck from the
$16,262 total purse,along
with custom Martin trophy
saddles.
Team roping is a
tim ed event that requires
a team effort. A team is
made up o f a“header” and
a “ heeler” . The h ead er’s
jo b is to catch the steer
around the horns, and then
set it up by turning it across
the arena. The heeler then
rides in and ropes the steer
around both hind legs. The
clock is stopped when thes-
teer is secured between both
ropers and their horses are
facing each other.
M uch like in the
sport o f golf, ropers are
handicapped or receive a
classification rating based
on their skill level and com
petitive ability. Ropers can
be classified from a #1 to
a #10, depending on their
roping position and abil
ity. The added total o f both
roping partners handicaps
determines their division-
eligibility. For example, if
the division is a #11, the
total rating for both ropers
cannot equal more than 11,
with some divisions requir
ing a handicap floor.
The West C oast
Regional Cham pionships
was the final among seven
Regional Finals to take place
across the U.S. throughout
the summer and included
a purse o f $182,000 along
w ith $77,000 in p rizes,
including 22 Martin Sad
dles and Gist Silversmiths
buckles. Also held during
the regional finals was a
prelim inary roping event
that allows ropers to qualify
for the U S T R C -branded
“Shoot Out” finals division
for each classification. A
total o f 936 teams competed
in the event w ith ropers
hailing from 10 states.
Offering an esti
mated combined total of $2
million in cash and prizes,
Regional Finals events are
a stepping-stone leading to
the USTRC Cinch National
Finals o f Team Roping in
Oklahoma City, Okla., Oc
tober 22-30. An estimated
purse o f m ore than $4.5
million in cash and prizes
will be on the table for the
taking at the event expected
to attract more than 3,000
teams.
The USTRC ap
proves more than 85 team
roping events across the
U nited States, attracting
ropers from bordering Mex
ico and Canada, as well as
other countries.

Doyle will give a presenta

brought them to Oregon.
“ T h e M o rro w
County Historical Society
was organized in 1974. Its
the history o f events and
stories o f county residents
who are the fabric o f this
area. Too often important
pieces o f our history are
lost,” said a society spokes-
peron.
The recently pub
lished 2011 Chronicles that
sells for $5 is now avail
able at banks, the museum
and M urray’s Drug store.
“ The stories capture the
diversity o f the people and
the co u n ty ’s topography
that stretches from the Co
lumbia River to peaks o f
the Blue Mountains. It’s a
fascinating read with high
lights about some veterans
to facts detailing with nu
merous, small sawmills and
country school houses that
once were an important seg
ment o f Morrow County.”
The dedication o f
H istorical Society m em
bers, some o f whom are no
longer living, resulted in a
large county history book
in 1983. This hardcover
ries about past and present
residents. How ever there
are still many citizens, both
old and new ones, whose
stories have not been re
corded. The continuation o f
a Chronicles booklet each
year focuses on recording
those stories. “ Everyone
who has lived in Morrow
County leaves footprints.
Public input is needed to
help record those stories.”
