    Boardman places bounty on
noxious weed
puncturevine, also known
as a “goathead,” contains
20 seeds equipped with
long sharp spines capable
of puncturing a bike tire or
a shoe. It takes only 3 weeks
for this weed to sprout and
make seeds. To make things
worse, the seeds are some
of the hardiest in nature;
they may lie in the ground
dormant for up to 20 years
until just the right condi
tions come along for them
to grow. Unless stopped,
any established puncture
vine will continue to grow
and spread until frost comes
City councilors
gave the green light last
Tuesday to spend $300
on a program aimed at
controlling puncturevine
within the city. The city
has run the program for the
last two years and says it
has been a huge success,
with citizens collecting
thousands of pounds of the
puncturevine.
Anyone who has
ever stepped on a puncture
vine (Tribulus terrestris)
seed knows what a pain the
plant can be. Each spiny
bur or seed pod from the
along.
The city of Board-
man plans to enlist the aid
of its citizens to control the
spread of puncturevine by
offering to pay for collec
tion of the weed through
out the month of August.
The puncturevine and seed
pods need to be collected in
bags provided by the city
and returned to City Hall
to receive the $1 per bag
bounty. The bounty will be
in effect throughout August
or until the entire $300 has
been paid out.
The city ’s code
compliance official, John
Russell, said, “This is a
great opportunity for local
youth to raise money for
their organizations and to
do something good for their
community.”
Areas of the most
concern are the city’s bike/
pedestrian paths and resi
dential areas. Bags can be
picked up at Boardman
City Hall any time from 8
a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning
August 1.

tion, contact Boardman City
Hall at 541-481-9252.

Class of ’61 to
hold reunion
Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, July
The Heppner class
o f’61 will be holding its 50*
class reunion at the Morrow
County Fair Grounds Satur
day, July 30.
“If you remember
what the class looked like
in 1961, come get a look
at them now,” said a class
spokesperson. “Some seem
shorter, some look taller,
and a few are pleasantly
plump. Maybe they turned
rich and famous, or there
may be a farmer or two.
Some are attending from
far off and some from not
so far. Whatever the case,
everyone’s happy for the
chance to get together and
brag, like fishermen swap
ping stories.”
Everyone in the
class took English, math,
science and history. The
class of ’61 has also made
some history o f its own,
if only for its children.
Everyone is welcome to
come share in the history
from 2:30-5:30 p.m., then
the rest of the evening is for
the class o f ’61.
