A View from the Hill
By Doris Brosnan
What’s not to like
when you live on a hilltop
with great views, have a
cook and housekeepers
to lighten your load, can
share time and memories
with contemporaries, and
are halfway into a month
designated as “the Month
of Ice Cream”?
These are some of
the benefits being enjoyed
in July at the Willow Creek
Terrace. Another benefit is
the fresh-from-our-garden
produce that enhances the
daily menus.
Bud Batty, LoisAl-
lyn and manager George
Nairns have been especially
busy in the garden—with
help from some of the other
residents—and the nearly-
weedless, healthy-looking
plants testify to their ef
forts. Already the peas have
been picked four times, the
onions are nearly ready for
“buttery, baked Walla Walla
Sweets,” and the beets have
been harvested once by vis
iting Brosnan boys, Carson
and Conor. Corn, squash,
potatoes and more veg
gies will soon be adding to
great menus at the Terrace.
Almost as fresh, straight
from the gardens of friends,
have come donations from
the Seilers, Lauritsens, Me-
ligans and Watkinses.
The same weather
that has stimulated some
growth in the garden has
also enabled Willow Creek
Terrace residents to jaunt
north for a picnic in the Ir-
rigon park. Eight residents
enjoyed the outing and the
“ Music in the Park” on
July 11.
When at home, res
idents find the weekly rou
tine comfortable, but also
invite interesting changes.
On Thursday morning of
this week, for instance, resi
dents will be encouraged
to enjoy manicures offered
by a small group of visiting
women.
One recent change
has occurred in the exercise
program and has become a
fixed part of the daily rou
tine. Kristy Taylor is lead
ing the group of enthusiasts
in Tai Chi.
Two new faces in
the exercise circle belong
to Willis Bailey, recently
from Joseph, and Billie
Kroske from Redmond. Bil
lie and Velma Wight have
discovered some mutual
memories and acquaintanc
es from their younger years
in Redmond. If and when
one more person moves into
the Terrace, the community
will again be complete.
And to complete
this report from the Hill,
the writer returns to the
topic of “ice cream.” As
most readers know, every
month of the calendar is
full of both significant and
comical days of observa
tions at the Terrac?. July
holds the record, though,
for number of days relating
to that creamy, rich dessert.
On July 1, residents and
staff celebrated “Creative
Ice Cream Day” by trying
flavors that included garlic
(yes; not a typographical
error), peanut butter and
rhubarb. July 4 lh included
homemade ice cream w ith
the fireworks. On the 7"’, ev
eryone recognized “Straw
berry Sundae Day,” and just
ten days later indulged on
“ Sundae Sunday.” Yet to
come, on the 22nd, they will
celebrate the birthday of the
ice cream cone.
Interesting to note
on the Terrace calendar is
that on the last day of this
month, the cook will be
serving Salad Supper. Sure
ly, residents will view that
as a tasty way—with many
fresh garden ingredients—
to pay for their month of
ice-cream-filled days.
