Heppner Elemen-
tary Students in grades K-6
who met all four acceler
ated reading goals o f the
school year were treated to
a trip to the Oregon Zoo in
Portland.
One hundred twen
ty five readers boarded
three buses for the journey
to the Rose City on Friday,
May 20. In addition to the
HES students, dozens of
staff members and parents
also made the trip to chap
eron the zoo visitors. On
the buses, the young people
played Bingo, won prizes
and enjoyed the scenery on
a sunny day in the Colum
bia River Gorge.
The students spent
over three hours touring and
seeing all of the animals at
the Oregon Zoo.
“A surprise to many
and staff spent the morning participating in v arious field
events to celebrate the end of another year.
HES teacher Terri Gentry organized the activ ities
with the help of several high school students. The HES
students enjoyed sack races, a beach fun relay, a water
balloon toss, an over-under relay and much more.
The events were cut short due to the weather,
but the tug-o-war event was held the next day, after the
end-of-the-year assembly. The first-grade students beat
out the kindergarten, second and third grade students and
the HES staff to be crowned the tug-o-war winners.
Top (L-R): Kolby Currin, Kaitlyn Martin, Nichole Shaw, Sa-
was the bat exhibit, as they
were truly fascinating to
watch!” commented one of
the chaperons on the trip.
The enormous el
ephants, giant giraffes and
playful penguins were all
favorites of the guests from
eastern Oregon. Sixth-grad
er Bryan Fowler added that
his favorite was the polar
bear.
Bryan said, “I had
never been to the Oregon
Zoo before, and it was sure
a lot of fun to go with so
many of my friends. It was
a great day.”

Windy River Elementary School students turned
out May 26 armed with garbage bags and gloves. More
than 220 students and their teachers spent two hours
picking up debris along South Main Street and Wilson
Lane. The students filled 2 10 large trash bags, and picked
up three couches and other items too large to fit in bags.
This is the fifth year the school has participated
in the clean-up. It is organized each year by Windy River
staff and the City of Boardman’s code compliance offi
cial. The city provides gloves, garbage bags and garbage
disposal. The school provides the eager volunteers.
“The clean up made a big difference in the ap
pearance along Main Street, and the students all had fun”
said John Russell, Boardman code compliance official.

There are better locations to dispose
of paint than a landfill.
On May 26, lone Schools Library Tech Cathy Hal
vorsen and fifth-grade teacher Lea Mathieu had the pleasure
of hosting a K-12 workshop by Oregon’s Poet Laureate,
Paulann Petersen.
Petersen met with lone elementary, middle and
high school grades for 45-minute sessions. In the sessions,
students learned to be creative in writing different types of
poems. At the end of the day, each grade or indiv idual high
school student read their poem in a final presentation to the
public.
Participants said they sincerely enjoyed Petersen’s
presentation. One teacher felt it was one of the best presen
tations given at the school in the past 20 years. “It was fun
because of the easy going way it was presented and, also, it
was rewarding to see all the kids stay on task and enjoy writ
ing poetry.”
The Oregon Poet Laureate is appointed by the gov
ernor. The program is a collaborative project of the state’s
five cultural partners, with funding from the Oregon Cultural
Trust.
