Daughter of Heppner woman hit Harpist wins scholarship competition
and state recital
by tornado
A n d re a H a ll,
daughter of Heppner wom
an Patricia Ward, faced
disaster when her mobile
home in Hackleburg, AL—
just north of Tuskaloosa—
was taken by a recent tor
nado. With the house went
everything H all’s family
owned, including photos
and personal belongings.
The family has since found
the wheels of the mobile
home, but have found no
trace of the rest.
Losses weren’t lim
ited to belongings; Hall’s
baby daughter, Kayse, was
taken to the hospital with
hypothermia. Her husband’s
parents also lost their home,
and Hall’s mother-in-law
broke both her arms trying
to hold up the wall of the
underground shelter.
After the tornados
ripped through the south
ern U.S. two weeks ago.
Ward tried unsuccessfully
to reach her daughter. Hall
eventually called relatives
in Hermiston and Arlington
to let them know she was
all right and that she had
lost her cell phone in the
storm.
H a ll’s tra g e d y
w a sn ’t only p e rso n a l.
Hackleburg, a town about
the size of Lexington, was
completely wiped out by
the tornado. Hall herself
was having a barbecue, but
said she received warning
in time to get to a shelter.
“It sounded like an
explosion,” said Hall.
Hall’s family is cur
rently staying with friends.
A bank account has been set
up at the Bank of Eastern
Oregon to help with disaster
recovery. Anyone interested
in making a donation can
ask for the Patricia Ward
tornado account.
Two musical hon
ors came to harpist Rebecca
Jepsen recently. She took
first place in the instrumen
tal division of the Monday
Musical Club of Portland’s
annual scholarship audi
tions and, additionally, was
featured as a soloist in the
American String Teachers
Association (ASTA) annual
statewide honors recital.
Jepsen, a junior at
lone High School, was
awarded $1,500 after per
forming with the other six
winners at the club’s May
Memorial Scholarship Tea
at the Holladay Park Plaza
Penthouse in Portland.
This year, the Mon
day M usical Club gave
out $10,000 in scholarship
funds to outstanding high
school and college musi
cians. The audition process,
which took place in April,
was limited to 30 vocal and
instrumental contestants
ages 16 to 24. Rebecca had
to perform two pieces from
memory from contrasting
musical periods. She played
Passacaille by Handel and
P iece Sym phonique by
French composer Henriette
Renie. She ended up plac
ing first out of the twenty
instrumental soloists.
Rebecca was also
selected to perform the Re
nie piece at the American
String Teachers Association
Honor Recital at the Port
land Music Center. Twelve
participants were selected
by taped audition. The re
cital featured violin, viola
and harp students from vari
ous areas of Oregon.
Rebecca has been
playing the harp for nine
years and studies with De
nise Fujikawa, harp teacher
at Portland State University
and harpist for the Portland
Opera.
