The Heppner Mus
tang track team traveled to
their district meet in Union
on Friday, May 13 with a lot
of question marks. Injuries
had caused a few athletes to
miss practices and compe
tition the previous weeks.
However, the M ustangs
rose to the competition as
the boys’ and girls’ teams
both finished fourth place
in the team standings. The
Mustangs also claimed five
individual titles as six ath
letes qualified for the state
track meet. The top two fin
ishers in each event qualify
for the state track meet.
Carrie Haguewood
and Emma Osmin each
won two individual events.
Haguewood claimed her
third straight title in the high
jump and also got a surpris
ing first place finish in the
long jump. Osmin raced to
first place finishes in the
100M and 200M dashes.
Jacob Moore won the shot
put with a personal best
throw. Moore also broke
the four-year-old district
meet record in the event.
Andrew Bara finished sec
ond in the 110M hurdles
and earned his first trip to
the state meet. The girls’
relay team (Haguewood,
Osmin, Bente Christen and
M ekayla K indle) ov er
took Weston-McEwen and
Union on the final stretch to
finish second.

Coiner said, “I was very
pleased with everyone’s ef
fort. The kids really stepped
it up today. 1 am extremely
pleased with our results.
There are a few kids that
have been to state before,
but there are also some that
get to experience it for the
first time. That’s exciting.”
The Mustangs will
compete at the 2A State
Championships on Friday
and Saturday at Western
Oregon University in Mon
mouth.
