Heppner FFA members receive
recognition at state convention
Eleven members of
the Heppner FFA Chapter
attended the Oregon State
FFA Convention March 19-
22 at Crater High School in
Central Point.
While there, mem­
bers Garrett Gibbs, Justin
Gutierrez, Justin Pranger,
Justin Yocom, Zech Hintz
and Zach Yocom all earned
their Oregon State FFA
Degrees. With that, the
boys join a limited number
o f other recipients from
Heppner since the 1939
inception of the Heppner
FFA Chapter.
In order to be eligi­
ble for the honor, the young
men had to be enrolled in
an agricultural program for
two or more years, provide
two years of record book
documentation, complete
a 12-page application, earn
and or invest $1000 or
work 500 hours in a super­
vised agricultural experi­
ence project, complete a
50-question test on general
Oregon agricultural and
FFA, prepare a PowerPoint
presentation, and complete
an interview by two Oregon
State FFA officers and a
panel of community mem­
bers designated by the host
interview school.

and Brett Harrison were
the recipients o f several
scholarships. There are
25 scholarships given out
at the state convention to
graduating seniors who
are active FFA members.
Each scholarship has its
own qualifications and ap­
plication requirements, and
scholarship finalists un­
dergo an intense interview
process after filling out a
lengthy application. Harri­
son, who plans on attending
Oregon State University
and majoring in Ag Busi­
ness, won the following
scholarships: Thorton, Al-

Robinson hasn’t finalized
his college choice yet, but
plans to major in Ag Engi­
neering. He was the recipi­
ent of: Sandy FFA Alumni,
Thorton and Oregon Seed
Trade.
The Heppner FFA
chapter was well repre­
sented overall, with six
district-winning proficien­
cies. The district winners
move on to com pete at
the state convention. Jar-
reid M iller competed in
agricultural m echanics,
repair and maintenance;
Kelsi Putman competed in
agricultural service; Brett
Harrison competed in both
diversified crop production
placement and diversified
agricultural production;
Devin Robinson competed
in both agricultural sales
entrepreneurship and diver­
sified livestock production
placement.

will represent Oregon on
the national level in his di­
versified livestock produc­
tion placement proficiency
award area. Proficiencies
consist of a 15-page ap­
plication with two years of
record-book documenta­
tion to substantiate the ap­
plication. The application
includes factors like hours
w orked, money earned,
depreciation/appreciation,
budgets, inventory, net-
w orth statem ents and a
record of skills achieved.
Additionally, Brett
Harrison competed for the
highest awards a state can
confer on a member, plac­
ing in the final four for
star farmer. Devin Robin­
son competed in the final
four for star in agricul­
tural placement, and was
selected as the winner for
the Oregon. Robinson will
go on to compete at the
national level.
Heppner FFA mem­
bers who weren’t competing
for awards had the respon­
sibility of being delegates
or serving on proficiency
com m ittees, which help
select the winners. Those
members from Heppner
include: Lilly Sandford,
Khayman Heard, Ashlie
Hanson, Macy Gibbs, Sky-
ler Hawks, Makenzi Hughes
and Garrett Robinson.

on April 22, scoring 70.5
team points with ju st 6
girls. Ten of eleven athletes
com peting for the team
experienced new Personal
Records (PR); those who
didn’t PR were consistent
with their personal best
marks. Beth Morter ran the
800M for the first time this
J'ear and improved her time,
running 2:35.54 and placing
2nd overall. Steven Holland
ran the 100M after taking
a break for several meets;
he placed 5lh overall with a
time of 11.56 sec.

4-H club has Easter fun

Foods Club had Easter fun
on April 17. The club mem­
bers did a foods judging
contest, then they evaluated
hamburger patties made
from different percentages,
from lean to the fattest ham­
burger, and made a Sloppy
Joe hamburger recipe. Club
members then made some
Easter treats. They used
plastic eggs to make Rice
Krispie eggs and then made
some nests and put Peep
candies in them.
