their Ball grandparents.
"Having grandpar
ents in town has been a
godsend,” says Fletcher.
A fter spending
years enduring long com
mutes, Fletcher says he now
looks forward to the simple
things about rural life, like
spending more time with
his family.
“I’m looking for
ward to attending my kids’
sports games and participat
ing more in raising them,”
he says.
He’s also anticipat
ing boating and hunting in
the summer, and getting
back in the mountains to go
after elk, but he says he’ll
be hunting with a rifle.
“I tried hunting
with a bow, but it didn’t
work out for me,” says
Fletcher. “It’s hard, and you
have to be quiet and sneaky,
which doesn’t seem to bode
well for me.”
Fletcher’s job as
MCSD business manager is
making sure school district
revenue meets the needs of
the budget. That’s no small
task in this economy, he
says.
“The biggest chal
lenge in the state right now
is inadequate revenue to
cover the increasing cost
of doing business. That’s a
problem across the board,”
says Fletcher.
Fortunately, the
MCSD is in great shape.
Thanks to careful manage
ment, Fletcher says, Mor
row County isn’t facing the
woes other state districts are
facing.
That means one
of Fletcher’s bigger chal
lenges will be transitioning
from the private sector to
government work, because
they have different financial
standards. His other con
cern is filling the job’s role
as well as Lorenz.
“I’m following in
the footsteps of someone
who was intimately famil
iar with the district. Those
are big shoes to fill,” says
Fletcher. “I’m sure the ter
rors will wear off after a
while.”

It was the I3,h year
for Heppner and third year
for Pendleton to sponsor a
walk. A total of $7,000 was
raised, with more donations
coming in daily.
“C lose to 200
walkers from many East

shared their experiences,
strengths and hopes, with
bonds being made, and new
friendships developed,”
McDowell said.
After the walk,
Pendleton volunteers served
hot dogs for the hungry
walkers. Darrin Umbarger,
co-chair, gave out raffle
items donated by the Pend

After an enjoy

“Where will we have the
walk next year?”
