Mark and Susan Embler of Dallas, TX are pleased
to announce the engagement o f their daughter, Rachael
Catherine Embler, to Darren Timothy Van Cleave o f
Rapid City, SD. Darren is the son of Tim and Myma Van
Cleave o f Pendleton.
Rachael graduated from Hillcrest High School
in Dallas, TX in 2004. She earned a bachelor’s degree in
international journalism from Texas Christian University
in 2008. She is currently employed as a reporter, anchor
and producer at KOTA Territory News in Rapid City,
SD.
Darren is a 2003 graduate of Heppner High
School. He graduated from the University o f Utah in
2007 with a bachelor’s degree in meteorology, and from
Colorado State University in 2009 with a m aster’s de­
gree in atmospheric science. He is currently employed
as a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in
Rapid City, SD.
The couple will exchange vows on September
5, 2011 in Fort Collins, CO.
Mara “Lynn” Young
Helix resident M ara Young, 58, form erly of
Heppner, died Saturday, April 9, 2011 at Oregon Health
& Science University Hospital in Portland. Sweeney

Former Heppner resident Daisy E. Collins, 93,
died Friday, April 8, 2011 in Junction City. Sweeney
Mortuary is in charge o f arrangements.
Vilas and Deb Ropp of Lexington announce the
engagement of their daughter, Linsey Ropp, to Brandon
Kellogg of Pendleton. Brandon is the son o f Debra Kel­
logg and Ben Tate o f Pendleton, and Woody Kellogg of
Baker City.
Linsey graduated from Heppner High School in
1998, and from Blue Mountain Community College in
Pendleton in 2000. She is employed as a financial special­
ist with Northwest Farm Credit Services in Pendleton.
Brandon is a 1999 graduate o f Griswold High
School in Helix, and a 2005 graduate from Eastern Or­
egon University in La Grande. He is employed as a crane
operator with Bechtel National Inc. at the Hanford site
in Richland, WA.
The couple will exchange vows July 2, 2011 in
a mountain wedding at the Ukiah ranch of the bride’s
parents.
Danielle Wallaert and Daniel Basile
The parents o f Danielle Elizabeth Wallaert o f
Colton, OR announce the engagement o f their daughter
to Daniel Joseph Basile o f Heppner.
Danielle is the daughter o f Dan and Nancy Wal­
laert of Colton, and Lisa Wallaert of Portland. Daniel is
the son o f Joseph and Debbie Basile o f Echo.
Danielle graduated from Colton High School
and from Eastern Oregon University in La Grande. She
is employed by Mountain Valley Therapy in La Grande.
Daniel is a graduate o f Heppner High School
and o f Eastern Oregon University in La Grande. He is
employed by Pendleton Electric in Pendleton.
The couple will exchange vows on May 7 in
Gresham, OR.
Methodist church to dedicate
new kitchen
Steve Ross, assistant to the bishop o f the Oregon/
Idaho Annual Conference, will be at the Heppner United
M ethodist Church on April 17 to dedicate the newly
refurbished kitchen.
The Methodist church is open to all who wish to
attend the service or the dedication. The dedication will
take place in the church basement/fellowship room at
noon following the Sunday service.
The United Methodist women’s group has been
selling raffle tickets for a barbecue grill, and the drawing
will be held after the dedication. Those holding raffle
tickets do not need to attend to win.
Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility
(PSR) will celebrate 30 years of working for peace and
health with an anniversary dinner Friday, April 15, at 6
pm at the Oregon Zoo. The event will feature a keynote
speech by Jody Williams, 1997 Nobel Peace Laureate
and founding director o f the International Campaign to
Ban Landmines. The event will also include an award
ceremony to honor the Oregon High School student win­
ners o f PSR’s Greenfield Peace Writing Contest.
The high school student winners of PSR’s Green­
field Peace Writing Contest will also be honored for
their essays, poems and stories on ridding the world o f
nuclear weapons. The five students who will be honored
were chosen from 65 entries from across the state who
answered the question “What do we need to change to
create a world without nuclear weapons?” The top three
winners will receive a cash prize ($1000, $750, $500), a
certificate signed by Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber,
and a one year membership in Oregon PSR. Two honor­
able mention winners will receive certificates.
First place was awarded to Erica Maranowski, a
senior at Portland’s Jefferson High School for her essay
entitled, “On Cultural Roots of Peace and Violence.”
Second place went to Tashina Rushlow, a junior at lone
Community School in lone for her poem “Darkness.”
Third place was awarded to Ethan Abelman-Sil, a junior
at Cleveland High School in Portland for his story, “Shad­
ows.” Honorable mention was awarded to Maria Ramirez
o f Valley Catholic in Beaverton and Rebecca Jepsen o f
lone Community School.
Judges for the peace writing contest included

and community activist; Laureen Nussbaum, PhD, PSU
