Lady Cards move to 11-1 in conference play
The lone Lady Car
dinals strengthened their
hold on first place in the Big
Sky East with three huge
wins last week, two against
east side rivals. With just
two league contests left
on the schedule, the Cards
sport an 11-1 record in
conference play and a 17-5
record overall.
It didn’t seem like
a Tuesday night game with
a packed gym and the lone
Community band playing
but that was due to the
importance of the match
against Condon/Wheeler.
The Cardinals put the first
blemish on Condon/Wheel
er’s perfect record back in
January and the Knights
were looking for payback
as well as fighting for their
playoff lives.
After trailing by
six towards the end of the
first quarter, the Cardinals
clawed their way back only
to see CW use an 8-2 run
to rebuild that six point
lead. Behind Shadow Ken
drick’s 11 point second
quarter, lone took a 30-28
lead to the locker room at
halftime.
The third quarter
was tight with neither team
able to edge ahead by more
than three points. Lacey
Thompson hit a basket with
30 seconds left in the frame
and the teams started the fi
nal eight minutes of play all
tied up at 40. Again Shadow
Kendrick came up big with
her own 7-3 run to start the
fourth. The Knights refused
to shake loose though. With
2:05 remaining in the game,
lone led by a slim, one point
margin, 49-48. With just
over a minute to go, Shad
ow Kendrick hit a jumper.
Fifteen seconds later, Lacey
Thompson was fouled on
her way to the basket. That
huge three point play pro
vided the separation the
Cardinals were looking for
as they finally stretched out
to a six point lea(f, $4-48.
The Knights weren’t able
to score on the next posses
sion and then provided such
an open look at the basket,
that Collette Cason banked
in a nice little shot to build
the lead to eight points with
35 seconds remaining. The
Knights made a three point
play to reduce the Cardinal
lead but Makenna Ramos
Beth Morter made the extra
pass to Lacey Thompson
for a score and the team
followed up with a textbook
press break lay in, also by
Lacey Thompson. With
1:35 showing, the Cardinals
were up 50-41. Echo then
sent the Cards to the free
throw line several times in
hopes of regaining posses
sion of the ball. With 9.2
seconds remaining, Beth
Morter hit the second of two
for the final margin 51-41.
Shadow Kendrick
led the Cardinal scoring 15
points. JoAnna Patton add

had four, Collette Cason

Heppner girls and boys
lose to Enterprise
In Enterprise on
Friday, February 4, the
Lady Mustangs played an
other close game against the
Outlaws. These two teams
were as evenly matched as
any in the conference.
Heppner came out
playing well, on both ends
of the court, scoring 29 in
the first half to Enterprise’s
24.
In the second half
the M ustangs’ offense
cooled off, only scoring
10 points. And, again, the
sixth ranked Outlaws, for
the second time, won by
two points, 41-39.
Bailey Bennett had
a good game, scoring 14
points and pulling down
17 rebounds for Heppner.
Point guard Alana Wilson
JV
also played well, scoring 13
points, two three-pointers
and three for four from the
line with six steals.
This team has
struggled to put together
fourth quarter of basketball
this season. We’re waiting
for their best game to appear
when they need it most, we
believe it is coming.
The Heppner boys’
team also lost to the En
terprise Outlaws for the
second time this year, 62-
50. They played pretty
good against the fast paced
Outlaws, scoring well and
coming a few times within
a couple points of the Out
laws. Enterprise went on
a late game scoring run to
seal the win.
The Heppner girls’
JV team got two wins on the
road this past weekend.
The trip started in
Enterprise on Friday. The
game started slow on of
fense for both teams and be
came a defensive struggle
the whole way. After one
quarter the Mustangs lead
3-1. In the second Ryan
Dougherty got some of
fense going with six and the
defense took if from there,
holding the Outlaws score
less for the quarter, taking a
9-1 halftime lead. The Mus
tangs looked like it might
get going on offense with
two quick baskets by Emma
Osmin. But once again, the
offense dried up.
But the Outlaws
got some offense going,
getting 11 in the third and
making it 15-11 after three
quarters. In the fourth the
Mustangs outscored Enter
prise 7-5 to take away a 22-
17 win. The Mustangs were
led in scoring by Dougherty
and Osmin with six each,
three each for Greenup and
Sandford, and two each for
Kindle and Day. Osmin also
led the team in rebound
ing with five. It was great
defensive effort especially
after their last meeting the
Outlaws won 48-33.
On Saturday Hep
pner traveled to Union to
take on the Bobcats. They
got off to a very fast start
leading 20-6 after the first
quarter led by Makenzie
Correa’s eight points, hit
ting two three-pointers.
That proved to be the dif
ference in the games as the
Bobcats kept chipping a
way at the lead through the
rest of the game, outscoring
the Mustangs 33-22 the rest
of the way. The girls pro
tected the ball enough at the
end and made just enough
free throws to pull out a 42-
39 win. The scoring for the
Mustangs was Correa with
16, Cassi Day seven, Emma
Osmin six, Blake Greenup
four, two each for Aimee
Seines, Carrie Haguewood,
Anne Gokesh, Larrisa Gray,
and one for Lilly Sandford.
Sandford and Day led the
team in rebounding with
seven and five each. Osmin
had five steals to lead the
team and Haguewood pro
vided three assists.
The two wins put
the JV’s record at 8-6 with
two games left against Ir-
rigon and Stanfield.

The lone Lady Cardinals J V team played well this week, losing
by only two points against Condon/Wheeler on February 1.
Foreign Exchange student Siren Endresen nailed an exciting
three-point shot at the final buzzer to finish the game 18-20.
And, following a hard fought game at Echo on February 4, they
again were only down by two points at the end of the game.
