Heppner teams fall to Rockets and TigerScots
On Friday, January
14, a moment o f silence
was shared in the Heppner
gym for the sudden passing
of girls’ varsity basketball
coach Mark Dowdy. His
family, the community, and
his team are all mourning
the loss o f such a good
person.
It was a team deci
sion to play the Pilot Rock
Rockets. “Do it for D” is
now Heppner basketball’s
motivation for giving their
all on the court. The league
leading Rockets had their
hands full as Heppner led
at the end of the first quarter
14-12 and at the half it was
tied 26-26. The Mustangs
were out scored 19-12 in the
third quarter as the Rockets
inside game took over to
seal the win 57-48.
Lindsay Cutsforth
had her best game in a
Heppner uniform scoring
20, while Dougherty and
Bennett each scored seven.
Heppner shot 10-20 from
the line. The M ustangs
played well, with a lot of
heart, and although the
game was lost, they com
peted with tremendous de
terminations and pride.
In the boys’ game,
the M ustangs came out
running by the Rockets in
the first quarter 17-10 and
continued with a lead at
halftime 30-27. The second
half was in favor o f Pilot
Rock as they outscored
Heppner 16-11 in the third
quarter and 15-10 in the
fourth quarter to win by
seven, 58-51.
Cody Orr scored
20 to lead the Mustangs.
Devin Robinson had nine
and Justin Pranger had eight
to round out the top scoring
for Heppner. The Mustangs
were 8-13 from the line and
3-21 from outside the arc.
It was a tough night
for Heppner basketball.

before, couldn’t find the
bucket in the first half, only
scoring nine points for a
15-9 TigerScot lead.
The third quarter
showed little change as
Heppner was out rebounded
handily, but only out-scored
by two, to make it 27-19.
When the fourth quarter
started, things started to
click for the Mustangs as
they turned the heat on
against the TigerScots in
a wild eight minutes o f
basketball that was fun to
watch, outscoring their op-
ponent 16-12 respectively,

both quarters of play for a
halftime score of 29-23.
The game turned
in favor of the TigerScots
in the second half. Weston

the end of the third quarter
with a tough TigerScot
crowd propelling their team
into a showdown. With
three minutes left in the
contest tied at 42, Jared
Hedman scored two on a
fast break lay-in. The next
time down the floor he was

Huskies, had more assists
and steals than their oppo
nent, and had less turnovers
than Sherman County.
Coach Jim Swan
son had this to say, “Again,
we played an incredible
defense, and this time our
shots fell. The boys played
a superb game.”
Molly Rhea led five members of the Arbuckle Nordic Club up
the 5326 to Hwy 53, southwest to the 170 spur, and then north
towards Arbuckle Mountain this past Saturday. It was overcast
but the group didn't get any precipitation until a few flakes
started to come down just after lunch. As they skied down to
lower elevations it changed to a drizzle and then it was raining
hard on the drive hack to Heppner. Considering the weather
forecast, the group had good ski conditions while on the trail.
Temperatures at the beginning and end of the trip w ere about
38 degrees. -Contributed Photo
