NRCS says deadlines for project
funding fast approaching
The Morrow County
Natural Resource Conserva
tion Service (NRCS) would
like to remind local land-
owners and operators o f two
programs that are currently
available to them. The Envi
ronmental Quality Incentives
Program (EQ1P) and the State
Acres For wildlife Enhance
ment (SA FE ) program are
both currently in an open ap
plication period.
The EQ1P program
is d esigned to assist with
implementation o f resource
improvements or protection
activities by offering financial
assistance to participating
landow ners. The Heppner
NRCS currently has an EQIP
funding pool available to assist
with rangeland and riparian
improvements that improve
mule deer habitat. Possible
activities could include, but
are not limited to, weed con
trol, rangeland water develop
ment, range seeding, aspen
protection, cross fencing, and
prescribed grazing practices.
The application period for
this funding pool is open until
December 15.
The SAFE program
is a continuous Conservation
Reserve Program (CRP) that
is focused on improving mule
deer habitat in existing farm
lands and expiring CRP lands
located within the Heppner Big
Game Management Unit. The
SAFE program is much like
standard CRP in the fact that
it provides financial assistance
for establishing and maintain
ing mule deer friendly CRP for
10-15 years. However, since
participants are going above
the basic requirem ents o f
standard CRP and are planting
wildlife friendly vegetation,
the SAFE program typically
provides higher cost share
rates for implementation and
is open for application at
anytime.
Anyone interested in
the EQIP or SAFE programs
can contact the NRCS in Hep
pner at 541-676-5021 or stop
by our office at 430 West Lin
den Way in Heppner.
