OSAA State 1A Volleyball
Tournament at Pacific Uni
versity in Forest Grove.

play against the number
one seed from the Mountain
Valley League, Hosanna
Christian of Klamath Falls.

ried that her team ’s lack
of experience at the state
tournam ent might show
up as a bad case of nerves
but she was pleasantly sur
prised when the team took
the court ready to play. The
Cardinals never trailed in
game one and never let
the Lady Lions closer than
three points on the way to
a 25-17 win. lone was able
to effectively shut down
Hosanna’s big hitter which
threw them into a tailspin.
“Basically they fell apart,”
noted Coach Eynetich as
the Lady Cards went on to
win the next two games,
25-10, 25-10. The lone hit
ters shared the wealth at the
net, led by Joanna Patton
with 10 kills. Beth Morter
added nine while Shadow
Kendrick had seven and
Siren Endresen had five.

out and played very well

That win booked
them in a semi-final match
up with Powder Valley, the
state’s number two ranked
team, in a game set for later
that same day. Where the
state tourney jitters were
kept under control in the
morning set, they showed
up big time in the evening.
Six missed serves and a lot
of little mistakes gave the
Badgers the first game 25-
17. In game two, Powder
was hitting on all eight, and
while the Lady Cards hung

opponent pulled away to
win 25-19. In game three,
lone got out in front and led
16-11 before the Badgers
swung the momentum back
their way. Powder took the
final game 25-20 to win the
match and dash the Cardi
nals hope of playing for a
state title.
“ When you play
a team like that, you have
to make the least amount
of mistakes to win,” said
Coach Eynetich. “We just
couldn’t get our act to
gether.”
The disappointed
Cardinals needed to re
member that the tournament
wasn’t over and they would
still need to play well in the
third place game the next
day at noon against a tall
St. Paul team. As they took
the court for that game, they
looked up to the challenge,
lone built a 12-7 lead and
stayed out front until the
Bucks caught them at point
19. From there it seemed,
the Lady Cardinals lost
their focus and lost game
one 20-25. Game two, by
all accounts, was a train-
wreck. Beth Morter, a Type
1 diabetic, encountered a
low blood sugar at the end
of game one and into game
two. “When Beth’s blood
sugar went wacky, we all
went wacky,” said Eynet
ich. The team got down 0-8
and looked nothing like the
team that had been playing
so well all year with bad
hits, silly mistakes and even
the first missed serve of the
entire year for the normally
unflappable server, Shadow
Kendrick. Despite all the
dismay, the team clawed
their way back into the game
but they “just couldn’t fin
ish it” said Eynetich. With
a final score of 25-21 in
favor of St. Paul, the Lady
Cardinals were looking
down the barrel of a quick
and unpleasant end to their
season. In the huddle after
the second game. Coach
Eynetich laid it on the line.
“I told them- this is it. This
is your chance. Either get
your heads in the game or
we’re going home in fifth
place." Senior taskmaster.
Beth Morter emphatically
told the team that she didn’t
come to state to go home
with a fifth place trophy.
W hatever the combi na
tion, it seemed a different
team took the court in game
three. Joanna Patton put
down seven kills in that
game alone as the Lady
Cards rattled the Bucks
and won game three, 25-13.
With the momentum firmly
behind lone, the Lady Cards
kept St Paul at bay for the
entire game four. Makenna
Ramos served the first four
points, including an ace
and Mary Rietmann served
eight points in a row to turn
an 11-7 lead into a 19-7
margin as the Lady Cards
ran away with the game
25-11. With both crowds
making lots of noise, the tie
breaker game was on. lone
got out to a 5-1 lead mainly
on the back of bad hits from
the Lady Bucks. St Paul
closed the gap but never
got ahead. Joanna Patton
put down an emphatic kill
to move lone to game point
and after St. Paul responded
with a kill of their own,
Shadow Kendrick smacked
a kill for the winning point
in the most unbelievable of
comeback wins.
“ Once we won
the third gam e, we got
the momentum and never
backed down,” said Coach
Eynetich. “I think St. Paul
thought they had it won.”
“Overall the girls
should be really proud of
themselves. They had to
live up to a third place
ranking all season so to take
home the third place trophy
is just awesome.”
Joanna Patton had
an outstanding game all
over the court. “Her back
row play was phenomenal,
she served great and she just
hit and hit,” said Eynetich.
Patton finished the game
with 20 kills and was named
to the All State First Team.
Makenna Ramos, the team’s
steadfast setter, worked
hard the entire tournament
and was named to the sec
ond team. Beth Morter put
down 11 kills of her own in
the match.
