lone biology students take field trip to coast
The biology stu

to the coast and Portland
area with biology teacher,
Erin Heideman. Thanks to
a generous grant from the

the trip at no cost.
The trip started with
a full tour w ith the Hatfield
Marine Science Center in
Newport that moved into a
full tour of the Yaquina Bay
Lighthouse, interpretive
center and the exploration
of tide pools. Despite cold
and rainy weather, students
jumped in and completed
their responsibilities and
learned a lot. “It was really
fun to get to learn out of
school,” said sophomore
Sophomore students in Erin Ueideman's biology class attended

reported several significant
developments, including:
-OSU’s search for
the wheat breeder position
vacated by Dr. Jim Peterson,
has been narrowed down to
two qualified candidates
- Dr. Bob Zem etra and
Dr. Ed Souza. Information
about these candidates and
their interview schedules
is available on the Crop
and Soil Science web page
at http://cropandsoil.or-
egonstate.edu/ under Public
Events. Recordings of their
on-campus seminar will
also be posted at this site.
They hope to have the new
wheat breeding program
leader on board in early
2011 .
-The OSU College
of Agricultural Sciences
(CA S) is facing severe
budget cuts in the current
and upcoming years. Based
on the premise that Branch
Experiment Stations (BES)
generate value for local
stakeholders, the CAS is
expecting each BES to gen
erate 25% of its base operat
ing budget (base salaries for
all employees and supplies
and services) from local
support beginning on July 1,
2011 with a phase-in period
lasting 2-4 years. Funds to
support research projects
are not considered in the
calculation.
-In the Federal Pro-
grams/Transportation Com
mittee meeting the subject
of disaster determinations
came up. Lynn Voigt, state
executive director and Josh
Hanning, district director
discussed how a county in
the state of Oregon might
go about getting a disaster
declaration made in order
to trigger SURE program
eligibility. This issue will
be one of the topics at the
January meeting as well.
In the meantime, growers
are encouraged to make
an appointment to discuss
their 2009 crop yields with
Kyle Camine in the Hep
pner FSA office to see if
their farm would qualify.
Remember to take 2009
crop insurance indemnity
info also.
T h e B o a rd o f
Directors o f the Oregon
Wheat Growers League
(OWGL) and the Oregon
Wheat Commission (OWC)
agreed to consider the po
tential establishment of a
new executive position, one
that would jointly oversee
the operation of the OWGL
and OWC, and would be
jointly funded by the two
organizations. The new
position would be located
in the Portland OWC of
fice. The OWGL’s existing
office and administrative
support staff in Pendle
ton would be maintained.
Growers are encouraged to
weigh in on this discussion
before the annual meeting
in Portland December 1-3.
Questions can be directed to
Shannon Rust at 541-326-
8202 or the OWGL office
at 541-276-7330.
