Lady Cardinals advance to state volleyball tournament

she and her volleyball
teammates powered their
way to a 3-0 win over visit
ing Portland Lutheran in the
second round of the OSAA
State 1A playoffs in lone
on Saturday, November
6. The win advances the
Lady Cardinals to the state
volleyball tournament for
the first time since 2002.
The state tournament is set
for November 12 & 13 at
Pacific University in Forest
Grove.
After sitting around
all day Saturday waiting for
the 5 p.m. game, the Cardi
nals shook off some opening
game jitters to take the first
set 25-17. The young Port
land Lutheran squad had
the game tied at 7-7 before
lone broke away for good.
Game two was a blowout
as lone went up 17-4 before
rolling on to the 25-13 final
score. The Blue Jays put up
their biggest fight in game
three, never letting the Lady
Cards get more than four
lone flag football teams
finish season
lone boasted two Hag football teams this year that competed in
the Hermiston Parks and Recreation League, a first and second
grade team coached by Ryan Rudolf and a third and fourth

kill of the match for the
25,h point, the Cards won
the game 25-15 and cel
ebrated their upcoming trip
to state.
Joanna Patton, a
lanky junior with a power
ful hit, had seven kills and
five blocks in the match.
She also served a perfect
11-11 with two aces. With
a m ile-w ide sm ile, she
summed up the mood of
the Cardinal faithful, “I’m
so excited.”

turning to almost full power
after a three-week layoff
with a sprained ankle and
a mid-week bout with the
flu had seven kills and she,
too, served a flawless 11-11.
“They had no answer for the
middle,” said Morter.

was 18-19 at the service
line with two aces and also
tallied 20 assists in the

out the season. For every
perfect serving game, the
Cards receive certificates
good for a milkshake. “I
think I have over 30 milk
shake certificates,” said
Kendrick. “I’m going to
give them aw ay for birthday
presents."

nantly Cardinal fans. “It
hasn’t really sunk in to
me yet. It probably will
when I try to go to sleep
tonight,” she said. After
a roller coaster season of
managing limited person

and “everything else you
could think o f ’ she was
proud of the w ay her team
played through it all. “The
girls have done a great job
of stepping in for whatever
came their way.”

Mountain Conference with their win over the Irrigon Knights
in their 53-8 victory Friday night. All Mustang seniors got to

Heppner Little League to meet
Heppner Little League will meet Wednesday,
November 17, at 7 p.m. at the Heppner Neighborhood
Center.
The Little League is in need of volunteers and
officers for this season. Officers will be elected at this
meeting.
