    USDA, FFA release new lesson
plans just in time for school
The U.S. Depart
ment of Agriculture’s Na
tional Agricultural Statis
tics Service (NASS) and the
National FFA Organization
have developed a new se
ries of K - 12 online learning
tools and outreach kits to
increase statistical literacy
in the classroom through
the exploration and use of
current census of agricul
ture data.
“ T h ese le sso n
plans contain relevant in
formation to give students
a realistic view of statistical
processes used to track our
nation's current and future
food supply” explained
Chris Mertz, director of
the NASS Oregon Field
Office. “The students will
have a chance to focus on a
variety of concepts includ
ing discovering new trends
in population subsets and
evaluating diversity among
farmers.”
The classroom -
ready resources, which
include lesson plans and
supporting materials, are
aligned with Oregon and
national curriculum stan
dards for science, math and
social studies. The materi
als use current Census of
Agriculture data to teach a
variety of concepts includ
ing discovering new trends
in population subsets and
evaluating diversity among
farmers.
The materials are
available online via the
NASS website http://www.
nass.usda.gov/Education_
andOutreach/index.asp
and the FFA Learning Cen
ter http://ffa.leam.com.

USDA begins Conservation Loan Program
USDA Farm Ser
vice Agency State Execu
tive Director, Lynn Voigt,
announced the launch of
a Conservation Loan (CL)
program that will provide
farm owners and farm-
related business operators
access to credit to imple
ment conservation tech
niques that conserve natural
resources.
“This w ill pro
vide farmers, who want to
implement conservation
measures on their lands, a
chance to do so by provid
ing assistance with their
up-front costs,” said Voigt.
“In return, these producers
will help reduce soil ero
sion, improve water quality
and promote sustainable
and organic agricultural
practices.”
Direct CLs can be
obtained through local Farm
Service Agency (FSA) of
fices with loan limits up to
$300,000. Guaranteed CLs
up to $ 1,112,000 are avail
able from lenders working
with FSA.
CL funds can be
used to implement conser
vation practices approved
by the Natural Resourc
es Conservation Service
(NRCS), such as the in
stallation of conservation
structures; establishment
of forest cover; installa
tion of water conservation
measures; establishment or
improvement of permanent
pastures; implementation
of manure management;
and the adaptation of other
emerging or existing con
servation practices, tech
niques or technologies.
For more informa
tion on the Conservation
Loan program, contact a
local FSA office or visit the
FSA website at www.fsa.
