A view from the hill
By Doris Brosnan
Some residents view additions to the Friday,
weekly routine at Willow Creek Terrace as definite posi
tives in their lives. Joining the St. Patrick Catholic Church
representatives who provide some Friday afternoon activi
ties are members o f the Heppner High School National
Honor Society. Enhancing the Friday morning exercises
are the “Brain Games” that participants are enjoying.
These large crossword puzzles are challenging enough
that residents would benefit from and truly appreciate a
current “crossword puzzle dictionary.”
One need not puzzle over reasons for these
and other activities on the Hill, for variety and national
uesignations direct the selection o f events to recognize
every month. Special days provide some truly enjoyable
moments for residents, as when residents noted “Cherish
an Antique Day” last month. They held a lengthy discus
sion o f favorite antiques and also decided that they are
pretty good antiques, themselves. When they discussed
the “National Siblings Day” in April, they enjoyed shar
ing many stories o f childhood and their brothers, sisters,
and cousins.
As May began with “National Hug Holiday,”
residents and staff started the month feeling pretty good,
since they received and gave many hugs through the May
2-8 week. Staff member Lori White treated everyone to
an authentic Mexican meal on Cinco de Mayo, May 5.
Although not a nationally recognized holiday, Lois Allen’s
birthday was an important event on May 9. Many national
recognitions have followed, including, believe it or not,
“Dance Like a Chicken Day.” Laughs galore resulted
when some staff and residents strutted their funky chicken
interpretations, and “laughter is good for the soul,” some
wise person said. Even when weather prevented play out
side on “National Backyard Games Week,” the undaunted
Terrace inhabitants played on, inside, and also learned a
new game, Bocce Ball. The month will bring a few more
special days, including “National Hamburger Day” and
more serious Memorial Day, which will provide the op
portunity to reminisce about loved ones.
Could the Terrace residents be “feeling the love”
of more valley neighbors? The visitors and donors lists
seem to grow almost monthly, and names noted recently
include George and M yma Syeler, Mary Lou Wilson,
Cecil Jones family, Jack and Jo Meligan Shirley Rugg,
Joan Basile, All Saints Episcopal Church, and members
o f the Heppner High School choir.
Other members of the Heppner High student body
lent a hand on “Mustang Mop-Up Day” by coming to the
Terrace to help plant more flowers and vegetables and to
wash the van. The garden is now almost fully planted with
food for the table and freezer, but some vegetables will
be planted on a rotation basis, so the garden will continue
to change its personality. Much o f the major work in the
garden has been accomplished by residents with years o f
valuable experience.
Each resident and staff member at Willow Creek
Terrace is viewed as a valuable member o f the community,
and these community members hope to welcome some
new neighbors again soon. Apartments are available,
so persons interested in information about the facility
is encouraged to call 676-0004. Soon, “Welcome to the
Terrace” might again echo down the halls.
