SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 7,2010
GOVERNOR
not meet with mem
bers of the minority Repub
lican Party. “As governor I
would meet with people.
I would spend some time
outside Salem,” he said he
would make it a point to
meet with local people in
every county every year if
he were elected.
In response to a
question from the audience
Dudley said it’s time to
reign in the size of govern
ment. “It has just grown too
big. It is not sustainable. We
have to create jobs in the
private sector.”
On the tax system
Dudley, who has been a
financial planner in Port
land since retiring from
basketball in 2003, said he
opposed measures 66 and
67 that raised taxes on busi
nesses and individuals, and
that he is also opposed to
doing away w ith the kicker,
w here Oregonians get back
tax money not anticipated
by the government. “The
kicker is the last restraint on
spending,” he said. 'Gov
ernment has to show it can
restrain itself.” He said
Salem needs to prove itself
to the people that it can be
responsible with money.
“We need to put real dollars
aside when things are good
in anticipation of the bad
times. We need to address
the spending side first,” he
said before the state should
look at changing the tax
structure.
On the national
health care plan recently
passed by Congress and
signed by the president,
Dudley said if he were
governor he would have the
egon, Dudley says the way
the credit is designed it
“has not been good for state
government.” “Why are we
giving away $10 million
that went to businesses that
went broke?” he asked. He
said the program has not
been managed properly. He
said there should have been
a cap placed on the amount
of tax credit wind farms
could receive.
In response to a
question about unequal
amounts of water Oregon
and Washington are draw
ing from the Columbia
River, Dudley said it needs
to be equal. “Since 1992
Oregon has been restricted
on the amount of water we
can take out of the Colum
bia River,” Port of Morrow
Manager Gary Neal told
Dudley. “Washington is
getting a lot more water
out of the river. Washing
attorney general "look into”
joining other states in filing
a lawsuit against the health
care reform bill.
On the national
forest he said government
needs "common sense” in
regulation of the forests.
He said there was a lot of
waste in the w ay the forests
are now managed. In his
literature he says he would
“...re-focus state policies
to support, not stand in the
way of, sustainable natural
resource industries in agri
culture and ranching, timber
and forest products...”
On Oregon land
use laws, he said there
needs to be more local in
put and support efforts to
provide rural areas "greater
flexibility for growth.”
On the Business
Energy Tax Credit (BETC)
that has been used by so
many wind farms in Or
ton should not be under a
different set of rules than
Oregon,” Neal said. “1 think
it should be equal on both
sides of the river,” Dudley
said.
He said he was
also opposed to the federal
cap and trade legislation
working through Congress.
“Energy is very important
to our region,” Neal told
Dudley.
Dudley, who lives
in Portland with his wife
and three children, says
a defining moment in his
life was in 1975 when he
was 10 years old. Every
morning he would raise
the American flag with his
grandfather and say the
Pledge of Allegiance. “My
grandfather would tell me
how fortunate we were to
live in this great country,”
Dudley said.
