2010 Farmer’s Market
dates announced
A Farmer’s Market meeting was held on April 1
where the dates for this season’s market were announced.
The market will be open June 18 through October 8. Each
Friday the market will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Each vendor and benefactor will contribute $20
to help defray the insurance premium and signs.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, May
6, at 5 p.m. at Heppner City Hall. All interested parties
are invited to attend.
HEROES to hold
appreciation dinner
The H.E.R.O.E.S. Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and Fund­
raiser will be held on Thursday, April 8 from 5:30-7 p.m. in
the Heppner Elementary School gym. A special presentation
for volunteers at 6 p.m. Pictured is Morrow County Commis­
sioner Ken Grieb reading with Joseph Jones. “HEROES is
great program,” said Grieb. “I started volunteering with the
SMART program when it first came to Heppner, and contin­
ued when HEROES started at the beginning of the last school
year.” When asked further why he volunteers, he stated simply
“It only takes one hour a week. Not only does it benefit the
children, but us volunteers as well, I really enjoy it”. The Book
Fair will also be going on in conjunction with the H.E.R.O.E.S.
dinner and fundraiser. The Book Fair will be open to the public

One o f two ch il­
dren, M ichael was born
August 27, 1942, in Boise,
ID, to Winnfred and Edith
Gatewood Crist. After high
school, Michael worked at
a variety of jobs, but a birth
defect in his heart made
w orking difficult. A few
o f the later things he did
included serving as a police
in Stanfield; working as an
insurance agent in Moses
Lake, WA; being a flagger
at race tracks in the Hermis-
ton area while he managed
an apartm ent complex in
W alla W alla; and taking
care o f the grounds at the
Walla Walla Airport until
his retirement in 1995.

ried the former Karen D.
Noguez on May 23, 1993
in Touchet, WA. He en­
joyed trap shooting at the
Walla Walla Gun Club and
was a 20-year member of
B.P.O.E. Lodge #2146 in
Milton-Free water.
Survivors include:

iel, 88, o f H eppner died
Thursday, April 1, 2010, at
her home. Funeral services
w ere held at 10 a.m. on
Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at
the First Christian Church
in Heppner. A graveside
service followed at 1 p.m.
on Tuesday, April 6, 2010,
at the Lonerock Cemetery in
Lonerock. A reception and
potluck folloed the grave­
side service at the Lonerock
Community Center.
She was bom Janu­
ary 3, 1922 at the family
home near Lexington, the
forth o f nine children bom
to Daniel and Iva Vincent
Way. She was raised and at­
tended school in Lexington
where she graduated in the
spring o f 1940. She loved
sports and was active in vol­
leyball in her high school
years.
On Septem ber 7,
1940 she m arried Dallas
M cDaniel in Weiser, ID.
The couple lived in Loner­
ock where they owned the
store and gas station, did
ranching and operated the
Post Office. The couple sold
their holdings and moved to
Pintiction, WA, for a short
time before settling in the
Heppner area in 1951. They
bought a ranch on Upper
Rhea C reek in 1958 and
continued to live out their
lives on this ranch.
In 1 9 6 7 , M rs .
M cDaniel was awarded a
governm ent contract for
Rural Route M ail D eliv­
ery th ro u g h the U nited
States Post Office, retiring
in 1989. She was an active
longtim e m em ber o f the
First Christian Church in
Heppner where she served
as secretary and Sunday
school teacher. She also
enjoyed longtime member­
ships w ith the R ebekah
Lodge and the Lexington

drove log truck until he re­
tired and moved to Bend.
Arlet loved the out­
doors and loved to fish and

family.
He is survived by:

Art show to be held during CenturyLink offering
lone 4th of July Celebration discount on phone services

have a new activity this year. The first annual lone Com­
munity Art Show will be held July 3-4 in the American
Legion Building.
Local artists are invited to enter their art pieces
for the community to view. This will be a show, not a sale.

He was born A u­
gust 4,1939 in Heppner, the
son o f Dari “ Shorty” and
Eva Shannon Hudson. Jay
D. was raised and attended
school in Heppner, gradu­
ating in 1957. He joined
the United States Army in
1958 and after completing
basic training at Fort Hood,
Texas, he was stationed in
Germany for two years. He
was honorably discharged
from the Army in 1960.
On October 4, 1961
he m arried Joan M oe in
Heppner. The couple was
blessed with three daugh­
ters. Mr. Hudson, a lumber
grader, worked for Kinzua
C orporation in H eppner
for over 37 years before
failing health forced him
to retire in 1998. He was
a longtime member o f the
Heppner Elks Lodge #358.

ting, and spending tim e
with his fam ily and also
watching his grandchildren
play sports.
