Irrigon Depot plan
continued from page 1
the rest in Umatilla.
The Depot has sig
nificant assets including
rail lines, large buildings
and roads, however what
Breazeale focused on Mon
day night was the igloos
and an idea to turn the
former munitions storage
buildings into mushroom
growing rooms.
“The mushroom busi
ness at first thought to be
a small opportunistic side
benefit to the industrial
buildings. However, after
much research, this looks
like a huge opportunity to
become one of the largest
producers in the nation
with shipments of 10 mil
lion pounds annually and
100 jobs in two years,” the
Irrigon plan says.
“This could grow to over
30 million pounds just by
using the six existing larg
est buildings. The produc
tion involves compost prod
ucts from local wheat straw,
poultry manure, canola and
other protein meals and
benefits many local indus
tries. The rail allows bulk
shipments of thousands of
tons of materials in and bulk
shipments and/or bag ship
ments of very high value
compost out in addition to
the mushrooms themselves.
Irrigon may have an annual
mushroom festival and pa
rade to celebrate the eco
nomic benefits of a future
industry,” the plan says.
The plan went on to
say that with a rack system
each igloo could hold up
to 5,000 sq. ft. of trays to
grow mushrooms. Each ig-
loo could produce $75,000
to $200,000 worth of spe
cialty mushroom crops an
nual. The first phase could
involve 100 igloos. The
igloos would be used for
growing specialty crops and
the larger buildings on the
Depot for bulk grow ing op
erations. It expected capital
investment of $20 million
to get started.
The darkness and even
temperatures of the igloos,
which were designed to
store chemical weapons for
the army long term, would
be ideal for mushrooms, the
report said.
The plan also cited
electrical wind generation,
grazing and dry land farm
ing as other uses for the
Depot when it is closed
and turned over to civilian
usage.
“Others have seen the
Depot for years as wasted
resources, marginal value,
run-down dilapidated build
ings, and stranded aban
doned assets- and nothing
has been done to change
that,” the plan says.
“Irrigon sees this as the
opportunity of a lifetime
for a community on the
move. Irrigon hopes to at
tract a following of hope
ful, creative and influential
people to rescue this op
portunity from the brink
of destruction and support
their dream of a thriving,
vibrant, prosperous com
munity,” it said.
An exact date when the
Depot will be closed has
not been determined, but
Breazeale says it could be
by March 2011.
Larger buildings on the Umatilla Army Depot could be
used for bulk musroom production according to a plan
proposed by the city of Irrigon. There will be large job
losses when the deport closes in a couple of years and
the city wants to create new job opportunities.
