Cardinals pull out win over Echo
The lone Cardinals
got back on the winning
track in their only game last
weekend, defeating Echo
in a close contest, 49-45.
Earlier in the week, the
Cardinals lost a physical,
non-conference match-up
with Riverside 66-53.
Playing on the road
in Echo on January 22, the
Cardinals established an
early lead, 13-5 over the
Cougars after one quarter.
But Echo was tenacious and
only trailed lone by three,
20-17 at the half. The hosts
narrowed the lead to just
two points at the start of
the fourth quarter but the
Cards were able to squeak
out the win.
Zac Orem led the
team in scoring with 18
points and Mat Hams added
17. The Cards struggled
from the floor, shooting
33% where they normally
shot in the 4 0 ’s. It was
helpful that Echo had an
even cooler shooting night,
making just 29% of their
shots. The Cardinals had
21 opportunities at the free
throw line but connected
on just 12.

Rietm ann also had two
blocked shots and three as
sists. Matt Hams paced the
team with four steals and
three assists.
“This was a huge
win,” said Coach Dennis
Stefani. “It is always hard
to get wins at Echo. Every
one played great defense
and worked hard until the
end.”
The Cards got off
to a slow start in Boardman
on Monday, January 19,
finding themselves down
10-4 after one quarter. But
they roared back to take the
half-time lead by outscor-
ing the Pirates 20-12 in the
second. Turnovers cost the

and the Pirates capitalized,
scoring 25 points. It was
too much for lone to over
come as they were defeated
66-53.
Three lone players
scored in double figures led
by Matt Hams with 18. Zac
Orem chipped in with 16
and Tanner Rietmann had
10. RJ Ramos led the Cardi
nals to a 36-35 rebounding
advantage with 10 boards.
Tanner Rietmann had nine
boards and Adam Collin
had eight.
“It was good to see
us play so physical,” said
Coach Dennis Stefani. “I
really felt we played well.
If we could take away a few
minutes in the third quarter
where we turned the ball
over, it was equal.”
Every game from
this point on is meaningful.
The Cards hosted Central
Christian on Tuesday (too
late for publication) and
also travel to Nixyaawii on
Friday and host South Was
co County on Saturday.

The Heppner Lady
Mustangs basketball team
used some clutch free throw
shooting to squeak out a
win in Pilot Rock on Fri
day night. With the win,
Heppner moves into first
place in the Blue Mountain
Conference.
Brynna Rust sank
two free throws in the final
minute to put Heppner up
by three points. Pilot Rock
responded with a lay-in
with seven seconds left, but
Erin Price dribbled out the
clock to preserve the win,
47-46.
Down 15-11 after
the first quarter, Heppner
used a 19 point second
quarter to pull ahead 30-25
at halftime. Jessica Hughes
led the Mustangs with 16
points, including two three-
pointers to spark the second
quarter run. Torri Lovgren
added 11 points and Brynna
Rust chipped in 10. Hepp
ner, as it has all year, made it
to the free throw line early,
converting often on 19 of
27 attempts.
Saturday night, the
Lady Mustangs returned
home to take on Weston-
McEwen. Heppner raced
out to a 17-2 lead after one
quarter and cruised to a
47-26 victory. Erin Price,
Joanna Patton and Torri
Lovgren each scored 10
points to lead the Mustangs
in scoring. Brynna Rust
led the team with eight re
bounds and six steals, to go
along with four points.
Weston-McEwen
only scored double digits
in one quarter, the fourth,
with Heppner’s starters on
the bench for most of that
quarter. The Lady Mustangs

The lone Lady Car
dinals had a tough outing
when they traveled to Echo
on Friday, January 22, los
ing to the Cougars 57-35.
The loss moves the Cardi
nal’s league mark to 5-2.
A fired-up Echo
team knocked the Lady
Cards on their heels imme
diately, taking a 12-1 lead
after one quarter and con
tinuing to roll in the second
to lead 30-8 at halftime. The
Lady Cards were down by
26 points when they put to
gether an 11 -0 run to cut the
lead to 15. Echo responded
but lone ran off a 6-2 run at
the end of the third, keeping
the lead at 15 going into
the fourth. A Beth Morter
steal and lay-in early in the
fourth cut the lead to 13 but
that was as lone would get
as Echo powered to the 20
point win.
Stefanie Archer led
the team with 10 points,
nine rebounds and five
steals. Beth Morter chipped
in with seven points and

Briana Peterson had six.
“ Echo cam e out
ready to play,” said Coach
Mike Garrett. "They did a
good job of handling our
press in the first half and
we couldn’t buy a bucket.
It was one of those nights.
Two of 26 from the field in
the first half and not tran
sitioning back on defense
aggressively put us in a
large deficit. The kids came
out and played a very good
second h alf and we are
looking forward to playing
them again in the couple of
weeks.”
