Lady Cardinals take win
over league rival Helix
The lone Lady Car
dinals stunned league rival
Helix in a game played in
Helix on Tuesday, Decem
ber 22. The Cards built an
8-1 lead early in the first
quarter and then took the
lead they never relinquished
early in the second, save for
one tie midway through
the third quarter, lo n e’s
lead was never more than
eight but the Lady Cardi
nals held on for the 41-37
conference win. With the
victory, the Lady Cardinals
boast a 2-0 record in the Big
Sky Conference.
lone went to a full
court press immediately and
used it effectively the entire
game. Helix, who lost two
starters to injury last week,
made uncharacteristic er
rors as the Lady Cards built
an 8-1 lead. An 11 -0 run for
the Lady Grizzlies put them
back in the game late in the
first but lone answered with
a 12-2 spurt at the end of the
first and through half of the
second. Beth Morter put up
nine points in the second
quarter and lone took a 22-
19 lead to the locker-room
at the half. The teams traded
scoring runs in the third and
the Lady Grizzlies got as
close as they would get to
the lead when they tied the
score at 26 midway through
the third, lone closed the
quarter with a 6-0 run,
leading 32-26 to start the
decisive final frame.
The fourth quarter
opened with a technical
foul on the Helix bench and
Tyree Svetich canned both
free throws. The Cards’ lead
bounced from eight to sev
en to five and then to four
with 1:45 remaining. On
one of the prettiest plays of
the game, Brianna Peter
son fed Shadow Kendrick
the ball on a press break
for a picture perfect half
court layin with 44 seconds
rem aining. As the Lady
Cards attempted to run out
the clock, things got a bit
chaotic and Helix seemed
determined to salvage a
w in. With under 30 seconds
remaining, the Lady Griz
zlies sunk a shot to close the
lead to three, 40-37. Beth
Morter had a chance to ice
the game with 8.8 to go,
shooting two but couldn't
connect. But Mary Riet-
mann made the lead a safer
four point margin swishing
the front end of a one and
one w ith 4.6 seconds on the
clock and the Cards were
glad to see time expire.
Coach Mike Gar
re tt w as m o m en tarily
speechless over the hard
fought win. However, he
recovered to revel in the
win that was a long time
coming. “ We passed the
ball well tonight on our
offensive sets. We’re really
starting to get some good
looks into the key.” He also
noted that the team was able
to run the full court press
from start to finish. “1 was
happy with our defensive
intensity. This was the third
game in a row that we have
shut down the opponent’s
best post player.”
Beth Morter led the
team in scoring with 13
points. Stefanie Archer
added eight while Tyree
Svetich, Shadow Kendrick
and Makenna Ramos each
had six. Morter also led the
team with seven rebounds
and four steals. Svetich led
with four assists and also
tallied five boards and two
steals.
