Lions’ district governor visits Heppner
D istrict governor
G erald H opkins m ade a
visit to the Heppner Lions,
praising the many projects
the local Lions have in their
community.
He noted that eye
glasses and hearing aids
were primary projects for
the club and expenses were
raised through the fishing
derby, fireworks, rifle raffle,
and rodeo program sales.
He noted that other projects
have included the mobile
screening unit, flags for first
graders, adopt a highway,
and scholarships. The club
has also supported Hep-
pner’s annual St. Patrick’s
Day Celebration.

Hopkins recognized Lion
Joyce Shepherd, who has
always been on the scene
for any volunteer activity
and serv ed as chair for the
m em bership com m ittee.
President Dick Paris was
recognized by the gover­
nor and given a personal
copy o f “Bites and Sights
o f L ionism ,” w ritten by
Hopkins. Also recognized
was non-Lion businessman
John Wight for helping the
club obtain a rifle for the
annual rifle raffle. John and
N ancy G o ch n eu er w ere
recognized for allow ing the
Lions to use their business
for monthly meetings.
Hopkins discussed
several other topics with
the members, including the
need to increase member­
ship, personal stories o f
becoming a Lion, the his­
tory of Lionism, the district
convention March 12-13 in
Pendleton, and the state­
wide community food drive
by Lions on January 30.

Basketball Bonanza
T he 12th a n n u a l
Basketball Bonanza Bas­
ketball Tournament will be
held in lone on December
4 and 5. B oys’ and girls’
ju n io r varsity and varsi­
ty team s from Riverside,
Um atilla, Enterprise, and
lone will participate in this
tournament.
Games will begin
at 1 p.m. on December 4
and 10 a.m. on December
5. Admission will be $4 for
adults per day, and $2 for
students per day.
T rophies w ill be
awarded to the champion
of each division.
The tournament is
an lone Booster Club fund­
raising event.

EN HOUSE
The North East and
South East Area Commis­
sions on Transportation, along
with the Oregon Department
of Transportation, will hold
public meetings in eight east­
ern Oregon communities on
the evening of December 7 to
discuss proposed transporta­
tion projects. The meetings
will start at 6 p.m.
The meetings are be­
ing held to provide informa­
tion to the public and collect
comments on the Draft 2010-
2013 Statew ide Transportation
Improvement Program, also
known as the ST1P. The STIP
comprises a list of statewide
transportation projects pro­
posed for funding during the
2010-2013, four-year STIP
cycle. The list includes over
100 projects for eastern Or­
egon.
The four-year STIP,
updated every two years, is
developed through the coordi­
nated efforts of OD( )T, ACTs,
federal and local governments,
tribal governments and the
public.

vice option will be offered
at Valby Lutheran Church
beginning Sunday, Decem­
ber 6. A bible study hour
will begin at 3 p.m., fol­
lowed by worship service
at 4 p.m. All are invited to
attend and participate. The
services are being orga­
nized as an alternative to the
ELCA Lutheran worship
service.

and 66 will have an organizational meeting for a summer
reunion on Monday, December 7, at G D ’s at 6 p.m. All

Willow Creek Baptist Church members will be
serving lunch on Wednesday, December 9. The menu will
include seafood chowder, coleslaw with pineapple, bread
bow ls, and cookies.
