Mustangs take win over Elgin
Cardinal football season remains
perfect after big win over Dufur
The lone Cardinals
kept their season record
perfect with a resounding
win over perennial pow
erhouse, Dufur, in Dufur
on Friday, September 25,
53-12. The Cards scored
first in the game and never
relin q u ish e d th eir lead,
eventually forcing the game
to a running clock in the
third quarter when the lead
went over 45 points.
Wins over Dufur
have been few and far be
tween in Cardinal football
history. It was recollected
that the last win was in the
fall o f 2003 and the one
before that was in the early
or m id-1990’s. “ It was a
terrific win for us,” said
Coach Dennis Stefani. “The
kids were thrilled to be part
of it.”
Micah Stillman hit
paydirt with 3:44 remaining
in the first quarter, running
in from four yards out,
the first o f what would be
three touchdown runs on
the night. Stillman caught a
pass from RJ Ramos for the
point after to put the Cards
up 8-0. Dufur capitalized

in from 14 yards out. With
the extra point denied, that
was as close as the Rangers
got in the game. The Cards
led 30-6 at the h a lf and
46-6 after three. Stillman
had two long runs in the
second quarter before the
Rietmann cousins got in the
act. Alex Rietmann scored
on a 29 yard run and then
Tanner Rietm ann scored
twice in the third quarter.
Gunner Jessen got loose in
the fourth quarter and ran
in the final lone score. Du
fur put six more points on
the board late in the fourth
quarter.
Micah Stillman was
the leading rusher, tallying
187 yards on 14 carries.
Alex Rietmann carried the
ball nine times for 89 yards
and Gunner Jessen had 71
yards on four carries. The
C ards totaled 431 yards
on the ground compared to
just 123 for the Rangers.
Q u a rte rb a c k RJ R am os
didn’t need to throw the
ball much but com pleted
five o f eight passes. Tanner
Rietmann was the leading
receiver with 59 yards on
two refeptions.
Defensively, Gun
ner Jessen led the way in
tackles with 10, five unas
sisted. Eric Jepsen had nine
(four solo), Micah Stillman
had six (two solo) and Evan
R ietm ann had five (one
solo.)
“O ur interior of
fensive line (Eric Jepsen,
Tom Holland and Christian
Cederquist) did a terrific
job. The blocks they made
opened holes that the run
ning backs fo u n d ,” said
Coach Stefani. “The ends
(M att Ham s and Tanner
Rietmann) also did a great
jo b c o n tro llin g D u fu r’s
quarterback.”
“We talked before
the game that teams have
been knocking on D ufur’s
door for the past couple
of years. We told the kids
that they were the better
football team and this was
their golden opportunity,”
said Coach Stefani. He was
proud to note that the team
wasn’t content with knock
ing on the door but used the
opportunity to “kick the
door in.”

Lady Cards 3-0 in league play
The lone Lady Car
dinals boosted their league
volleyball record to a per
fect 3-0 w ith w ins over
Dufur and Echo last week.
It took five games
and two full hours to get it
done in Dufur, 25-20, 19-
25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-6 on
Friday, September 25. The
Cards won the first game
after building an early lead
and holding o ff the Lady
Rangers. Both teams had
some miscues in the second
game with the teams trad
ing missed serves. Dufur
led early before lone tied
them at 18 but the Rang
ers capitalized on Cardinal
mistakes to take the win.
The third game was close
all the way but the tough
Dufur defense scooped up
everything that came their
way and got that win. Down
2-1, the Lady Cards were
not ready to throw in the
towel just yet. Good team
work gave them the early
lead and key kills by Vanes
sa Ziliani and Beth Morter
at the end of the match not
only gave lone the win but
a noticeable shift in mo
mentum. That carried into
the game five tied breaker
where, on the first play of
the game, Vanessa Ziliani
put down a thunderous kill.
It was the hit that fired up
the tired Lady Cards and
broke the spirit of the Lady
Rangers. Vanessa went on
to serve points 4-13 with
two aces thrown in for good

Coach Dawn

that day, was ecstatic with
the win. “ We lost a bit of

counted,” she said.

Vanessa Ziliani added 11
and Briana Peterson had
seven.
The Lady C ard i
nals hosted Echo at mid-day
on Saturday, September 26,
knowing they needed to stay
focused to avoid a post-big
game let down. And they
did just that. The Cardinals
dom inated the first tw o
games 25-10, 25-10 and let
up only slightly in the third,
winning 25-16.
Vanessa Ziliani led
the attack at the net with
eight kills. Beth M orter
added five, Tyree Svetich

team served well. Stefanie
