A Spray resident got his hair parted Sunday by
a .22 bullet and here’s the story a local physician, who
treated him for a three-inch scalp wound, got concern­
ing the shooting:
The man had a bottle on his head which a
hunting partner was using as a target. The shot was a
little low with the result that the man received a crease
in his noggin.
Who fired the shot was not revealed.
Birth Announcement
Kaylee Grace Lavender - Jason and Tina Laven­
der of Pflugerville, TX announce the birth of a daughter,
Kaylee Grace Lavender.
Kaylee was bom on June 12, 2009 at Austin
Medical Center. At birth she weighed six pounds, fifteen
ounces, and was 20 inches in length. She joins brothers,
Jackson, 5, and Cooper, 2, at home.
Grandparents are Ronnie and Sandra Lavender
of Austin, TX and Tony and Verina Schiller of Pfluger­
ville, TX.
Great-grandparents are Wallace and Mamie Lav­
ender of Waco, TX and Gladys Hall and the late Lloyd
Hall of Hewitt, TX and Marilyn Schiller and the late
Bob Schiller of Echo and Raymond and Norma French
of Heppner.
Potluck to be held at All
Saint’s Episcopal Church
A potluck lunch for church and community mem­
bers to visit with the Rev. Janis Johnson will be held at
All Saint’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, July 12, after
the church service.
Those planning to attend are asked to bring a
main dish, salad or dessert.

Seventh Day Adventist
Church to hold VBS
Seventh Day Adventist Church will hold Vacation
Bible School July 20-25 from 6-8 p.m. for grades K-6.
The theme will be “Jesus’ Kids in the Kitchen.”
The kids will learn healthy cooking and eating. Partici­
pants will make their own snack and all crafts will be made
with food. There will also be games and bible stories.

Lowe passed away on June
25,2009, after a long battle
with ovarian cancer.
Kathleen was bom
on July 16, 1957, in Pueb­
lo, CO, the
daughter of
Dr. F r e d ­

Retta Boyle.

live in a va­
riety o f states including
M assachusetts, Florida,
North Carolina, and Alaska.
Kathleen moved to Bend
w ith her family at the age of
10, and spent the rest of her
life in central and eastern
Oregon.
Kathleen attended
high school at Bend High
and graduated in 1975.
While there she was a mem­
ber o f the cheerleading
squad and gymnastic team
qualifying for the state
gymnastic tournament as a
senior. She began her col­
lege career at Central Or­
egon Community College
and transferred to Oregon
Health Science University
to obtain her bachelors of
nursing in 1979. Kathleen
continued her nursing edu­
cation graduating with a
M asters in Com m unity
Health Nursing in 1992,
and then a post-masters as
a Family Nurse Practitioner
in 1996.
In 1977, Kathleen
reconnected with Douglas
Lowe, a former Bend High
classmate who became the
love of her life. Kathleen
and Doug married on Au­
gust 25, 1979, and lived in
Bend for two years where
Kathleen worked as a RN
at St. Charles Medical Cen­
ter. In 1981, Kathleen and
Doug moved to Heppner
after purchasing Bucknam’s
Tavern. While in Heppner,
Kathleen worked as a RN at
Pioneer Hospital and then
later for Oregon Health
Science University.
Kathleen’s great­
est love was always her
family. They enjoyed hunt­
ing, fishing, camping, and
spending time together
outdoors. Kathleen was an
extraordinary mother and
she and Doug raised three
wonderful children, Travis
26, Trenton 24, and Caitlin
21 .
Kathleen had many
creative interests including
gardening, knitting, making
stain glass windows, ceram­
ics, sewing, and quilting.
Kathleen enjoyed making
things for her family and
friends, and most recently
created exquisite quilts for
each of her children.
The profession of
nursing was a very im­
portant part of Kathleen’s
life and she was most pas­
sionate about her role as a
nursing instructor at both
O regon Health Science
University and Central Or­
egon Community College.
Kathleen was respected by
her nursing students for her
ability to not only instruct
but to mentor and encour­
age them in their develop­
ment as nurses.
Kathleen was sur­
rounded by her entire fam­
ily at the time of her death,
which was her wish. She
leaves many friends and
family who will miss her
tremendously.

A memorial service
will be held at 2 pm, on
Friday, July 10, 2009, at
Trinity Episcopal church in
downtown Bend.

Hudson
Former Pendleton
resident Chuck “Charlie”
H udson, 80, o f O regon
-City died Saturday, June 27,
2009, in Oregon City.
Mr. Hudson was
bom November, 19, 1928,
in Pendleton to Lowell and
Mary Hudson. He gradu­
ated from Pendleton High
School in 1946, and earned
a bachelor’s degree from
Lewis & Clark College in
Portland and a m aster’s
degree from Linfield Col­
lege in McMinnville. He
married Eileen Senseney
in 1949 in Portland. He
served in the Army during
World War II in the Seventh
Calvary.

al on Tuesday, June 30.

a day of golf and a salad
luncheon.

formerly of Heppner and

died Friday,
M ay 15,
2009 at his
home.

Horton

in Wallowa Willard R.
Horton
on April 24,
1941, the son
of Cyril and Emma Hen­
derson Horton. He joined
the United States Navy in
1959. After his honorable
discharge from the Navy
he worked in logging and
with heavy equipment. He
married Judy Ann Savage at
Lewiston Idaho in 1962.
He is survived by:
his wife, Judy Horton of
Hermiston; daughters, So­
nya Edgemond of Weston,
Judy Marie Story also of
Weston, and Diana Teal

Mary L. Zinter, 88,
of lone died Friday, July 3,
2009 at her home.
She was born at
Newport, WA on May 20,
1921 the daughter of Barney
and Mildred
C arr Cain.

school. She married Sidney
C. Zinter on May 20, 1946
at Thompson Falls, MT.
The couple settled on the
Zinter Ranch at Gooseberry
near lone. He preceded her
in death in 1983.
Mrs. Zinter enjoyed
cooking, sewing, and gar­
dening. She was a member
of the Christian Life Center
Church in Heppner.
She is survived by:
her son, Sid Zinter of lone;
daughter, Julie Kalegi of Se­
attle, WA; brothers, Loren
Cain o f Kennewick, WA,
and Gary Cain of Modesto,
CA; sisters, Norma Storro
and Edith A dam s, both
o f Spokane, WA; and six
grandchildren.
Funeral services
for Mrs. Zinter will be held
at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July
11, 2009 at the Christian
Life Center in Heppner
with concluding service and
burial to follow at the Hep­
pner Masonic Cemetery.

of Fame for the 1950 track
team, and into the North­
west Athletic Directors Hall
of Fame. He won the first
eight-man football cham­
pionship in 1960 in lone
and was a runner-up with
the 1961 boys’ basketball
team. He was the first ath­
letic director at Clackamas
CC, where he started many
of the men’s and women’s
sports. He retired in 1986.
Mr. Hudson is sur­
vived by: daughters, Patty
Rolen of The Dalles and
Joan Ferguson of Oregon
City; sons Jim Hudson of
N orth C arolina and A l­
lan Hudson of Redmond;
brothers Ron Hudson of
Pendleton, Bob Hudson
o f Portland and Maurice
Hudson of Roseburg; and
two nephews.
He was preceded
in death by his wife Eileen
in 2004, and nephew Scott
Hudson.
A memorial service
will be held at 5 p.m. on
Thursday, July 9, at the new
Oregon City High School
auditorium, 19761 S. Bea­
vercreek Road, O regon
City. There will be a buffet
following the service.
