Wetherells win Boardman Yard of the Month
Barbara and Mike
Wetherell were no strangers
to landscaping in a desert
setting when they moved
to Boardman from Condon
and Arlington. They have
pragm atically and lov
ingly created a Shangri-La
amidst cow pastures on
Kunze Road. For over 30
years they have coaxed
beauty from the desert’s
unyielding clim ate and
sand.
Compost was car
ried from Arlington to en
rich the sandy soil. Exist
ing locust, Russian Olive
and Cottonwood trees were
left to create shade while
more desirable trees could
establish. Some trees were
selectively removed leav
ing plenty of habitats. Fox
es, rabbits and many birds
are at home there.
The W etherells
utilized huge granite er
ratic boulders left here
by the M issoula Flood,
placing them artistically
in their landscape, after
removing them from their
pasture. One garden path is
made from brown Blalock
Canyon rocks. Forgotten
bricks from the old Arling-
ton School reside alongside
Barbara and Mike Wetherell
a courtyard made from
broken cement chunks out
of the old irrigation canal
channel. In the courtyard
on a hot summer evening
friends can sit and visit in
the shade of two huge pine
trees, surrounded by the
sound of gently splashing
w ater and evening bird
song. On some occasions,
there is Pruterberry cham
pagne made from Mike
and Barbara’s very own
Pruterberry bushes.
The dictionary de
scribes Shangri-La as an
imaginary remote paradise
on earth. Congratulations
to Barbara and Mike Weth
erell for creating a real
Shangri-La for the Board-
man June 2009 Yard of the
Month.
