Mustang track team competes at Carnival of Speed
The Heppner High
School track team competed
in their second meet of the
season on April 3rd when
they traveled to Milton-
Freewater for the Carnival
o f Speed. There were 29
teams and nearly 600 par
ticipants at one of the largest
track meets the Mustangs
will compete in all year. The
Mustangs gained valuable
experience against the tough
competition.
The girls’ team fin
ished in seventh place w ith
32.33 points. Erin Price led
the Mustangs by placing in
all four of her events. She
placed third in the 400-meter
dash, third in the 300-meter
hurdles, and fourth in the
100-meter hurdles. Price,
Brynna Rust, Catherine
McElligott and JoAnna Pat
ton each ran a leg on the
4x400 relay team that took
second place. Rust placed
in two individual events
with a seventh place finish
in the 200-meter dash, sixth
place finish in the 300-meter
hurdles. McElligott took
seventh in the 800-meters,
and Carrie Haguewood fin
ished tied for eighth in the
high jump.
Jordan H atfield
placed in three events and
led the boys’ team to a 14lh
place finish. Hatfield took
second in the triple jump,
and fourth place in both the
110-meter hurdles and the
300-meter hurdles. While
Hatfield was the only boy
scoring points for the Mus
tangs, sev eral boys bettered
their times and made per
sonal bests.
In the next two
weeks the Mustangs will
compete in four meets. They
traveled to Stanfield on
Tuesday, April 7th, and then
co-host the Umatilla/Hep-
pner Invitational on April
