In response to E.O. editorial
To the editor:
This is a response to the E.O. editorial implying
the extravagance of obtaining expensive China dinnerware
for the White House by Laura Bush during the present
economic climate. What the editorial didn't say is that
these dishes were commissioned several years ago before
this economic downturn. Secondly these China settings, a
tangible asset, was purchased through a privately funded
trust of the White House Historical Association, not tax
payer money. Too, these dishes were all obtained through
U.S. companies, not foreign manufacturers
Interesting that there was little criticism of the mil
lions of campaign dollars spent by democratic presidential
candidates w hile at the same time banks and other financial
institutions were crashing and people were losing their
savings and/or homes.
Laura Bush stated that additional White House
china was needed because of breakage and the need for
more place settings for larger gatherings. It's told that some
china sets have been diminished by former presidents w ho
took dishes when leaving the White House. Compared
to the cost of these dishes at $485,999 (commissioned
by Laura Bush) l don’t recall people criticizing Hilary
Clinton when she spent $600,000 for White House dishes
that must not have included the needed number of place
settings. (Or maybe her staff was a little careless when it
came to dish handling?)
What I find indefensible in these stressful times are
the automatic pay raises for Congress, those very people
who are supposedly elected to enact legislation that is for
the betterment of the majority of people. Instead of trim
ming the pork and streamlining the budgets of all agen
cies, they spend more time looking for more revenue, it
seems.
Closer to home is another taxpayer expense. At a
cost of $3.4 million, the office wing of the state capitol
building was renovated and refurnished during this past
year. Some taxpayers would probably settle for that used
furniture or maybe use the cast off desks for a roof over
their heads.
