The Hawks lit up the

ter to build an eight point
halftime lead, 30-22 in Ho
rizon’s shiny new gym in
Hood River. The Cardinals
got back in the game with
an 8-0 run early and two Zac
Orem three pointers in the
third quarter. After pulling
even at 42 with less than a
minute in the third, Horizon
reclaimed the lead to start
the fourth quarter up by four,
46-42.
W ith the gam e in
the balance, the Cards took
the fourth quarter by storm,
starting out with a 15-2 run,
taking the lead for the first
time since early in the first
quarter 57-48. The Cards
maintained their intensity,
outscoring the Hawks 25-11
in the final frame to take the
67-57 win.
“T his was a huge
win on the road,’’ said Coach
Dennis Stefani. 1 was very
pleased to see the kids come
out in the second half and
play with intensity. Our de
fense was the difference in
this one.”

The Cards led 13-8

much as 11 in the second

to two points in the third
quarter before a 13-2 Car

50-39 after three. The teams
swapped scores in the fourth
and a Knight three pointer
allowed them to get back
within five but the Cards
were cool under pressure,
finishing with a 67-56 win.
“This was a great
team win,” said Coach Den
nis Stefani. He noted that
Matt Hams had a fine of
fensive effort with 24 points
and Zac Orem chipped in
12 but "it was Tanner Ri-
etmann’s 16 points and 11
rebounds and Clay Morter's
nine points and 12 rebounds
that made the difference.”
“It was playing as a
team that made all that hap
pen. It was a great effort by
everyone on this win” said
Stefani.
With just two more
weekends o f league play,
the Cardinals look to finish
strong. This weekend, both
games will be on the road,
traveling to A rlington on
Friday and Condon/Wheeler
on Saturday.
Mustangs outrun Tigers
JH girls win all four games in Helix

Winning 65-58, the Mustangs took advantage of
the Stanfield Tigers who weren’t prepared for their run
ning game.
“It was obvious that our conditioning was much
better than theirs,” said Coach David Norton. “That was
the key to the game.”
Brent Eckman led the Mustangs to victory with 19
points. Chris Lien added 17 points and Jared Huddleston
had 15 points. The Mustangs improve to a 7-2 league
standing.

The junior high girls’ basketball team traveled to
Helix on Friday and won all four games against Echo and
Helix.
The A team beat Echo 35-24 and soared over Helix
54-15. ’“Defensively, we could work on denying cutters
and blocking out,” said Coach Mindy Wilson.
The B team also won both o f their games. “I'm
really liking the aggressiveness on offense,” said Coach
Chris Rauch.

Mustang JV boys win over Knights

The M ustangs JV
boys’ team increased their
second h a lf effort in the
gam e against the Irrigon
Knights last Saturday for a
55-39 win.
The Irrigon Knights
kept pace with the Mustangs
in the first half, leading 20-
18 at the end o f the second
quarter.
“ At h a lf-tim e we
talked about raising our in
tensity level. The boys came
out and got in their faces and
the pressure defense paid
off in some steals and easy
buckets,” said Coach Ken
Grieb. "That’s what got us
going in the third quarter.”
With a pep talk from
their coach and a new defen
sive strategy, the Mustangs
came out and executed. At
the end o f the third quar
ter, the M ustangs led the
K nights 35-23 and went
on to win the game by 16
points.

Irrigon Knights.
