Rockets steal close one from Lady Mustangs
Lady Cards notch tW O more wins
By Jennifer W ilson
The lone Lady Car
dinals put two more in the
win column last weekend,
defeating Cascade Locks in
lone on Friday and Echo on
the road on Saturday. The
wins moved their league
mark to 6-3 and kept them
in the hunt for a district title
berth.
The Lady Cards
pounced on the Lady Pirates
early, jumping out to a 13-2
first quarter lead. Cascade
Locks came back a bit in
the second, narrowing the
Cards lead to seven at the
half, 21-14.
In the third quarter,
Cascade Locks hit a pair of
free throws to narrow the
lead to five before the lone
girls went on a 16-0 tear to
open up the game. The Lady
Pirates scored seven points
in less than a minute towards
the end of the third but lone
kept the heat on and rolled
to a 47-27 win.
Beth Morter led the
team in scoring w ith 14. Ste-
fanie Archer had a double
double with 10 points and 16
rebounds. Hailey Arbogast
added six and Tyree Svetich
had five.
“This was a good
league win. Cascade Locks
is very aggressive and
scrappy,” said Coach Mike
Garrett. “We played very
good team basketball and
our defense continues to
be our strength. We had 23
steals and converted many
of those into easy buckets.
Offensively we are continu
ing to get some great looks
and are being patient with
the ball.”
The C ards knew
they were in for a dogfight
when they traveled to Echo
on Saturday after defeating
Echo in a close one two
weeks ago. The first half of
the game was an offensive
stalemate. The teams were
tied 6-6 at the end of a
low scoring first half. Echo
pulled ahead by as much as
six points in the third quarter
before the scoring tandem
of Stefanie Archer and Beth
Morter put nine points on
the board, drawing the two
teams even again at the end
of the third, 15-15. lone put
on a 12-1 run to go up 27-
16 with just 1:34 remaining
in the game. Echo scored
six points in the last 1:34 to
narrow the lead but the Lady
Cards took the win 27-20.
Beth Morter led all
scorers with 15 points. Ste
fanie Archer added 10 to
go along with her 10 re
bounds. Briana Peterson
was the only other Cardinal
to score in the game with
two points.
“This was another
good win for us. Echo has
some good athletes and a
size advantage on us in the
post,” said Coach Mike Gar
rett. “Stefanie Archer got
into foul trouble early in the
first half and I thought Tori
Heagy and Hailey Arbogast
did a great job of controlling
the key during the second
quarter. We were having a
poor night shooting from the
floor and we needed our de
fense to keep us in the game
and all of the girls did a great
job. Anytime you can hold
your opponent scoreless
during a quarter is a great
accomplishment. We had
back-to-back nights with 20
plus steals and that defen
sive pressure has allowed
us to have a 6 - 3 conference
record.”

last Friday against the Pilot
Rock Rockets. Despite the
team effort, the Rockets
stole the win by one with a
final score of 41 -40.
Even with some key
Pilot Rock players in early
foul trouble, the score at the
end of the first half was tied
17-17.
The Lady Mustangs
came up short in the third
quarter, allow ing the Rock
ets to outscore them 16-13.
However, Catherine McEl-
ligott and Taylor Dougherty
combined efforts to post five
points in the last remaining
seconds of the quarter.
It was a strong fourth
quarter start for the Lady
Mustangs as they scored
seven unanswered points,
leading 37-33. Scoreless
for nearly four minutes, the
Rockets fired up a three-
point shot closing the Mus
tangs lead to one.
Erin Price put up a
shot for two points to put the
Mustangs back up by three.
Pilot Rock answered back
with three points of their
own to tie the score at 39-39
with 1:30 left in the game.
Mustangs then had
two appearances at the char
ity stripe but only made one
of the four attempts.
