Heppner mayor visits HES
From Heppner Elementary
teacher Jannie Allen
A m onth or more
ago, the Heppner Elementary
School’s government class’
d a ily v o c a b u la ry w ord
was “ m ayor.” Many o f
the fourth graders d id n 't
know w hat, or who, a mayor
was, said teacher Jannie
Allen. So they decided to
invite H ep p n er’s mayor,
Les Paustian, to visit the
Social Studies class. Tim
Jaca from the class called
the mayor and he agreed to
visit, which he did later that
week.
Mayor Paustian told
about his roles as mayor, and
the students asked a variety
o f questions. They were
surprised that he did all of
that work without being paid,
and that led to a discussion
o f doing the right thing to
help out your community.
As the mayor told about the
improvement project soon
to begin on Court Street,
the idea of helping to fix the
footbridge from Court Street
to the main part o f town was
bom.
Class members were
supposed to have a bake sale
to raise money to help repair
that bridge the evening, but
when the light parade was
cancelled, so was the bake
sale.
