Support for Time Out for Reading
Dear Editor and GT readers:
If you attended fifth or sixth grade at Heppner El
ementary School within the last 20 years or so, you know
all about Time Out for Reading. This reading incentive
program for grades five and six has been going strong for
over tw o decades, and hundreds o f thousands o f minutes
have been read and tallied by those young people partici
pating.
Time Out for Reading is funded entirely on its
own. Over the years we have been ticket takers at the St.
Patrick's Day Motocross Races, collected cans, held bake
sales, made crafts for Artifactory, held a penny drive, and
much more. The program has also been very fortunate
to have local citizens (including my own students) and
community organizations who have generously donated
to the cause.
This year we will once again sell raffle tickets for
a pan of Babe Ruth bars. If you don’t know about these
treats, ask any student at Heppner High, or a fifth or sixth
grade student at HES. Trust me when 1 say they are yummy.
The winner receives a full pan (about four dozen) of the
chocolaty peanut buttery delights.
The winning ticket is to be pulled after Heppner
Light Parade on December 18. Tickets are on sale at the
Heppner Elementary and Heppner High School’s offices
and Heppner TV. Supporters, and treat lovers, will also be
able to purchase tickets December 9 at the Heppner High
Mustang basketball game.
In the season o f giving, it doesn’t get much easier
than this... support a program that encourages, and re
wards, our students for reading, and have the chance to
win your own pan o f Babe Ruth bars. When faced with a
whole pan o f the treats, whether or not you remember it
is a season o f sharing is completely up to you.
Merry Christmas, and we appreciate your sup
port.
