Back- man, Jr., was held Sunday, N ovem b e r 9, 2008, at Finley Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Portland, Oregon. Mr. Backman, 77, o f lone died Tuesday, November 4,2008 at Pioneer Memorial Hospi tal in Heppner. Mr. Backman was born December 15, 1930, at Centerville, Utah, the son o f Samuel A. and Margaret Parenson Backman. He was raised at Centerville where he g rad u ated from high school. On February 2,1949, he married his high school sweetheart, Ida Gonnuscio, at Centerville, Utah. The couple raised three daugh ters and three sons. The family moved to Oregon, where he worked as a long shoreman for the I.L.W.U. Local #8. They lived in the Beaverton - Hillsboro area for 35 years, before moving to lone in the late 1980s. He was a life mem b er o f N o rth A m erican Hunting Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the railroad and camping. He was pas sionate about baseball and trains. Mr. Backman loved road trips and planning all the stops. His children and grandchildren were his pride and his dog “Max” was his best friend and companion. His wife o f 59 years de scribes him as the love of her life. He is survived by his wife; Ida Backman o f lone, O regon; daughters, Cathy Roberts of Boardman, Oregon, Lori Fisher and her husband, Joe, o f West Linn, O regon, Jennifer M artyn and her husband, Mike, of Durham, Oregon: sons, Mi chael Backman and his wife, Rosa, o f Cornelius, Oregon, W ally B ackm an and his wife, Sandy, o f Prineville, Oregon, and Paul Backman o f Irrigon, Oregon; broth ers, Herb Burk of Madras, Oregon and Donnie Burk of Salem, Oregon; sisters, Lola Nestor and Bonnie Butler, both of Ocean Park, Wash ington; 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Nancy Dixon A combined memo rial service for Melvin and Nancy Dixon will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, No vem ber 23, at R iverside Community Church o f God in C ottage G rove with a reception following. Melvin Dixon died November 1, 2008, at the age o f 91 following many years o f illness. He was lov ingly cared for by his wife, Nancy until she suffered a hip fracture and serious ill ness that led to her passing on September 18, 2008, o f this year. Melvin Dixon was born August 20, 1917, in Shan dong P ro v ince, Chi na, o f mis sion a ry par ents, S ta n - ley and Eva D ixon. He married his wife, Nancy, in May o f 1942. He received B.A. and Masters o f .Divin ity degrees at Pasadena Col lege in Pasadena, California. The Dixons’ first pastorates were in Santa Barbara, Cali fornia, and Breckenridge, M ichigan. They co n tin ued pastoring M ethodist churches th ro u g h o u t the state o f O regon (S hedd, Medford, Heppner, Cottage Grove, and Milton-Freewa- ter/Weston) until retirement in 1980. After retirement he co n tin u ed as long as he was physically able to provide pastoral assistance to various denom inations including United M ethod ist, Lutheran, and Church o f God. They are survived by two daughters, Sharon Dixon o f Springfield and Marra Dixon o f Creswell. A p p aren tly the previous policy was leaving the city open to insurance claim li ability. “The public should be aware that it is their re sponsibility for sewer lines from the property line to the mainline,” said Paustian. In other business the council read an email from city manager on leave David DeM ayo who said he would be back on the job soon. “I will be depart ing Iraq at the end o f the third week in November,” DeMayo wrote. “I expect to be back in Heppner ready for work on December 1, 2008,” he said. DeM ayo has been deployed to Iraq w ith the A rm y R eserves and interim manager Steve Bogart has been filling in for him. The council learned that the Oregon Department o f Transportation will be giving a presentation at the December council meeting on the upcoming Court St. reconstruction project. The council also heard that there have been some problems with the St. Patrick’s Sr. Center remod eling project, but overall it is on schedule and on budget. A p p aren tly som e o f the showers ordered were too large for the bathrooms, and there were other problems uncovered. “There are a lot o f surprises,” said Bogart. “But we have the money to fix them, and, as with any rem o d elin g p ro ject, you are going to run into costs that you did not anticipate,” he said. “But there is noth ing that is too major. We have not had any signifi cant problems,” he told the council. The rem odeling project is costing $750,000, not $75,000 as incorrectly reported in last week’s Ga zette. T he c o u n cil was told there were only two juvenile incidents last m onth. The co u n cil had been co n cern ed w ith an increase in juvenile crimes and d elin q u en cy around town which was discussed at last month’s council meet ing. The subject o f activat ing N eighborhood Watch programs again was talked about. Neighborhood Watch is not part o f city govern ment and is organized and carried out by citizens. It was announced that anyone wanting to start a Neighbor hood Watch should contact Deputy John Bowles o f the M orrow C o u n ty S h e riff Dept, who will help with advice in setting one up.
