CARD OF THANKS
hom e N o v ?
I
1 would like to thank the
H eppner G azette Times for
the coverage o f the Fire and
Fuels C areer Cam p held at
our T upper w ork center in
mid-October. While the focus
o f the article was the camp
itself, I think it is important to
recognize that the Tupper Fire
and Fuels Career camp is only
successful because o f the tre
mendous amount o f time and
effort put forth by the employ
ees o f the Umatilla National
Forest, our numerous partners,
and the p a rtic ip a tin g high
school seniors. Over the last
two years, the camp has been
fully supported by the Morrow
County School D istrict and
its students, six National For
ests, the US Fish and Wildlife
Service, Oregon Department
o f Forestry, Bureau o f Land
Management, Blue Mountain
and Central Oregon Commu
nity Colleges, along with other
cooperators.
Although it would impos
sible to list all the individuals
that have been involved in the
development and implementa
tion of this project, I would like
to express my appreciation to a
few o f our Heppner residents.
Thanks to the Superintendent
o f the Morrow County School
District, Mark Burrows, and
to the Heppner High School
Principal, Daye Stone, without
your cooperation, this project
would not be possible.
I would also like to pub
licly thank the employees o f
the Heppner Ranger District
for embracing the idea o f the
camp and putting your time
and energy into making sure
that the camp is a success.
K risten M arsh all and Bill
Schlaich, both Heppner High
School graduates, served as
the coordinators for this year’s
camp and worked with over 60
individuals from the Heppner
Ranger District, the Umatilla
National Forest, and partners
throughout the state o f Oregon
in making the camp a quality
experience for the students.
I would like to thank the
16 high school students (and
their parents and guardians),
for participating in this unique
o p p o rtu n ity to learn m ore
about the Forest Service and
potential careers in natural
resources. We hosted students
from Riverside, Irrigon, and
Heppner High School for the
week long training. Finally, a
special thank you to the Hep
pner High School students
that participated in the career
camp - Braden Britt, Stephanie
Cutsfo/th, Mercedes Garrett,
Dillon Lutcher, Stephanie Rill,
and K athryn Strouse -.y o u
have helped make this year’s
camp memorable and an out
standing success!
