A view from the hill
Gordon C'raber
By Doris Brosnan
Passing up the good food served on the Hill is dif
ficult for the Willow Creek Terrace residents. The fresh
produce, lately from Pecks, Shirley Rugg, Donna Osmin,
Phyllis Piper, Seilers, and Hislers, creates such tasty side
dishes that complement the beef and pork on Ann Gump's
menus, thanks to the Oddfellows and Andersons. But, on
Wednesdays, a few residents view lunch at the Senior
Center an important event. Those good lunches are comple
mented with conversation full o f news that the residents
can take back to the Terrace to share with neighbors.
The Center becomes a destination for several resi
dents on Tuesday afternoons, also. They join several other
area residents o f a wide age range, share some noshes,
and vie for that elusive “blackout” pot while hoping to
win some o f the smaller Bingo games. One can see why
some residents view the St. Patrick Senior Center, which
is undergoing a major renovation, as an important element
in their lives.
The pumpkin patch is important to many residents,
and this year, they have shared their pumpkins with the
Heppner Day Care Colt Club. That Friday group o f young
students will surely turn them into some interesting jack-o-
lantems and maybe enjoy some roasted pumpkin seeds.
This summer, a bird dropped an entertaining sur
prise near those pumpkins: Everyone watched the develop
ment o f a lone sunflower that grew to an impressive 16-inch
diameter! Gordon Craber was especially interested in this
gift from the sky, as he is an avid gardener. In fact, interest
in having a vegetable garden next spring is grow ing among
the residents and staff, so gardening might become part o f
the routine at the Terrace.
The daily and weekly routines offer residents
opportunities to participate in card games, Bingo, group
reading o f the Gazette-Times, the Saturday matinee, and
craft projects.
Staying fit is also part of the daily routine, but ex
ercising does not have to be routine. Recently, that activity
included line dancing. Yes, confusion reigned briefly, but
some residents proved quite capable o f a boot-scootin’
boogy, even some using their walkers! (During “ Line
Dancing Week, of course.”)
Though they are not regularly scheduled into the
routine at the Terrace, the OF Time Fiddlers are frequent
visitors, and they delighted their audience again on Sep
tember 7. The welcome mat remains out for them and their
boot-tapping music.
One routine on the Hill is to celebrate special,
designated days, no matter how obscure, but these celebra
tions offer anything but routine activities. For instance,
one might try to picture the challenges and variety the
residents and staff have in commemorating Assisted-Li ving
Week, Patriot Day, International-Chocolate Day, Comic-
Book Day, Ancestor-Appreciation Day, Teddy-Bear Day,
World Smile Day, National Kick-Butt Day, and Make-a-
Difference Day. Coming up soon is Flaunted-Refrigerator
Day and Frankenstein Friday....
This Halloween, visitors to the Terrace will be
haunted by some characters who look as though they might
belong in an offbeat western movie. A horse and rider will
have the greeter’s spot at the front door. And could a saloon
girl be playing the organ? Many, many “cattle ears” are
now accumulating in the parlor, so one will have to visit
on Halloween to find out if the staff or the residents will
have turned into cowboys/girls, Indians, or bovines! Trick-
or-treaters are again welcome from 5 to 8 p.m.
The routine and not-so-routine obviously keep
the Community on the Hill on their toes. In the view o f
one person, “Some o f these activities create an important,
anticipated schedule, and some add a sense o f adventure,
also important for anyone.”
