lone falls to Dufur 76-34 in homecoming showdown
The lone Cardinals
suffered a humbling defeat
at the hands o f the Dufur
Rangers last Friday night
76-34 putting a damper on
the otherwise festive home
com ing atm osphere. The
Rangers were ranked #1 in
the latest state 1A football
poll.
The Cards opened
the game on a high note
when Matt Hams ran the
opening kickoff back 85
yards for a touchdown. The
point after was no good but
the Cardinals led 6-0. Dufur
immediately retaliated with
four unanswered scores in
the first quarter.
At the end o f the
q u arter, the C ards w ere
m oving the ball. Starting
on their own 40, the Cards
m oved to the R anger 20
mainly thanks to a 35 yard
pass from RJ R am os to
Clay M orter. But on the
20 yard line on fourth and
10, the Rangers deflected a
Ramos pass and took pos
session o f the ball on their
own 20. They opened the
second quarter with a 75
yard touchdown run. On the
Card’s next possession, they
fumbled the ball inside their
own 20. Dufur recovered
and scooted in for another
score three plays later. The
Rangers added insult to in
jury when they intercepted a
Ramos pass and ran it back
for a touchdown with 2:53
left in the half.
The Cardinals were
down but they proved they
w eren’t out. Taking about
two minutes to do so, lone
drove from the Ranger 35
for another score. Micah
Stillman got free for a 10
yard run when they badly
needed a first down. With
just over a minute remain
ing in the half, RJ Ramos
hit, Clay M orter for a 42

yard touchdown pass and
they connected again for
the point after to make the
score 48-14.
A nifty onside kick
worked to perfection and
the Cards recovered the ball
on the Dufur 40. With time
slipping away in the half,
RJ Ramos connected with
Matt Hams for a 40 yard
touchdow n pass and the
score was 48-20.
H alftim e was full
o f distractions as the 2008
H om ecom in g c o u rt was
presented. H ow ever D u
fur had no such issues and
roared out after halftime to
score twice more in the third
quarter. The Cardinals did
put together their best drive
o f the gam e at that tim e
though. Taking six and half
minutes off the clock, the
Cardinals started the drive
on their own 26 and steadily
m oved dow nfield w ith a
ground and air attack. Cory
Peterson snuck into from six
yards out for the score.
lone put together one
more nice drive to finish out
the game. With Zac Orem at
the helm, the Cards started
at their own 35 and drove
downfield before Orem con
nected w ith M att H am s
for a four yard touchdown
pass. He then hit Alex Fet-
terhoff for the extra point.
“ D e fe n s iv e ly we
have to play better," said
Coach Dennis Stefani. “ It
co m es dow n to m aking
tackles and we just didn't
make the stops.” He noted
that many times, the Cards
were in position but missed
the tackles.
The Cards tallied 327
yards o f total offense. Cory
Peterson led the attack on
the ground with 113 yards
on 23 carries. Micah Still
man added 20 yards on three
carries, lone had 156 yards
in the air. RJ Ramos was
seven o f 18 for 133 yards
with four interceptions and
two touchdowns. Zac Orem
was four of five for 25 yards
and one touchdown.
The leading receiv
er for the game was Clay
Morter, catching six for 93
yards. Matt Hams had two
receptions for 45. Dufur had
375 yards on the ground and
171 in the air for 546 yards
o f total offense.
“Offensively, 1 felt
we m oved the ball p ret
ty w ell,” said Coach Ste
fani. “The long drive (in
the third quarter) made me
happy. It showed what we
can do.
Clay Morter led the
team with 10 tackles. Cory'
Peterson had seven and Tan
ner Rietmann, Eric Jepsen
and Micah Stillman all had
six.
The Cardinals travel
to Echo Friday night for a
crucial match up. “ We’ve
g o t to g iv e o u r s e lv e s
som e chances. We needs
some three and outs," said
Coach Stefani. “If we play
som e defen se and m ake
some tackles, we have a
chance." Game time is 7
p.m. at Echo.

CSEPP Siren Test
scheduled for October 28
A test o f the Oregon
Chemical Stockpile Emer

gram (CSEPP) siren system
is scheduled for noon on
Tuesday, October 28. The
test coincides with tests of
CSEPP sirens on the Uma

Benton County, WA.
The 76 sirens will
begin the test with a verbal
m essage in English and
Spanish reminding people
that it is only a test. The
message will be followed
by sounding of the Westmin

emergency, the sirens would
blare a distinctly different
alert tone for three minutes,
followed by instructions in
English and Spanish.
Highway m essage
reader boards along 1-82 and
1-84 will also be tested on
October 28. Motorists will
see a reminder of the noon
siren test displayed.
The sirens and high
way reader boards are two of
five public warning systems
that would be activated by
em erg en cy m anagem ent
officials in the event o f a
chemical emergency at the
Umatilla County Depot. The
sirens, highw ay m essage
reader boards and higway
