Middle East and Smithsonian Programs offered for MC residents
A special travelogue
program about the Middle
East will be held in Heppner
on Wednesday, September
3, and a program from the
Smithsonian American Art
M useum will be held in
B oardm an on T hursday,
September 4. Both programs
are hosted by the Oregon
Trail Library District and
brought to Morrow County
by Libraries o f Eastern Or­
egon (LEO).
At 7 p.m. on Septem­
ber 3 at the Heppner Public
Library, Curt Bell and Linda
McKim-Bell will present “A
Sense o f Place: A Journey
Home to the Middle East,"
which will include slides
and discussion about their
recent trip to Middle Eastern
countries. Bell was bom in
Bahrain and lived there for
many years. He attended
college in Lebanon and is a
retired neuroscientist who
now works with McKim-
Bell in international human
rights organizations.
“ N ow m ore th an
ever it’s important to see the
human side o f these Middle
Eastern nations,” Bell said.
“ Peace efforts begin with
an understanding o f other
cultures.”
The program is free
and open to persons o f all
ages. Middle East refresh­
ments will be served.
On Thursday, Sep­
tember 4, at 11 a.m. at the
Boardman Public Library, a
live videoconference will be
presented by the Smithso­
nian American Art Museum
(SAAM). Area residents are
encouraged to attend and
to talk directly with staff
from the Washington, D.C.
museum.
Museum staff will
present “ A m erica’s A rt,”
which includes highlights
from the national collection
o f art with particular em­
phasis on our relationship
to the land.
“From sea to shining
sea, from wilderness to ur­
ban centers, those attending
the program can discover
the social, political and tech­
nological innovations that
have profoundly affected
American life and art,” said
Woody D ow ling, SAAM
distance learning manager.
The program s are
part o f L E O ’s “ A Sense
o f P lace” series o f p ro ­
grams in the arts, sciences
and humanities, funded by
the n atio n al In stitu te o f
Museum and Library Ser­
vices (IMLS). IMLS is the

Morrow County ( ’hronicles on sale
The 2008 Morrow County Chronicles went on sale
at the Morrow County Fair. This newly published issue o f
the Chronicles is now available at all branches o f the Bank
o f Eastern Oregon, at the Morrow County Museum, and
at the Boardman Pharmacy.
Issues o f previous Chronicles continue to be avail­
able at the Museum. All but the first two years o f the series
remain in print. The cost o f each volume is $5.
The Morrow County Historical Society publica­
tions feature original and reprinted articles pertinent to
Morrow County’s history. Anyone interested in helping
to produce a Chronicles for next year is encouraged to
call Louis Carlson in Heppner or Carol Michael in Board-
man.

Ladies Play Day was held on Tuesday, August
19, at the Willow Creek Country Club. Results are as
